Interestingly enough, the Divesoft Liberty that he was diving HAS a buddy light. They call it a “buddy display.” Unfortunately it apparently wasn’t obnoxious enough.

Although to be fair, there was so much wrong with that whole situation that even with the extra fault tolerant features of that particular rebreather, he still managed to kill himself.

I'm not sure which incident you're talking about, or any of the details. But let me tell you this as well: The handset will vibrate aggressively enough to scare you if you're not paying attention. It has alarms for High PO2, Low PO2, High CNS, End of Deco, and stack time milestones. They're not offensive enough to require being turned off, but let me emphasize the fact that they are HARD to miss.

And yet...

Yes, there is a very bright and noticeable buddy light on the back top of the liberty. It works great, if it's turned on. :)

So, since we are referring to incidents where we have limited information....

What about the incident at Blue Grotto? Could a red buddy alert have given the instructor a warning that something bad was developing? *being fully aware that would have not made all those issues go away..

Doubt it.
I'm convinced that the instructor was performing way past her comfort level, and had advanced way too far, too fast.
Too bad that the boyfriend that gave her her cave instructor, RB cave Instructor card wasn't punished appropriately by his certifing organisation.

Does it come on automatically in dive mode? Or is there a separate control?
