Hi Cameron,

Do believe it is a good idea for PADI, SDI, and SSI to require 100 logged dives as a prerequisite to train for a solo/self-reliant/independent cert?

I do.

thanks,
markm
It is probably important that they have had a couple of Oh Sh!t moments too in order that they can understand how they react to an emergency.

Wouldn't it be even better if they had been able to avoid any Oh S*** moments? After all, having a couple of Oh S*** moments means that their judgment had lapsed at least a couple of times...

I am not sure that having their first one while alone would be better. If you dive enough you are going to have one at some point.

I was wondering the same thing: if I manage to get to 100 dives without a ‘Oh S***’ moment, does that mean I am not ready to do the solo diver class ? :)

You've definitely got a point. OTOH, I'd rather dive with a guy who's had 100 dives without any Oh S*** moments than someone who had 100 dives and several Oh S*** moments.

LOL...then after a hundred dives and this post you qualify...geez.

What if he wasn't the guy that caused the OS moment but had to react to another's. My son's first stage exploding was an OS moment for me and it was neither his or my fault but a good learning situation.

Hmmm, 546 dives and no Oh S*** moments. Guess I'm overdue. Oh, and almost 300 of those dives were solo.
Sorry you cannot dive solo until you get a OS*** moment.

Scuba Police ! arrest this man !

Absolutely. But I guess you could ask the OP. Maybe they really meant to say "is there a valid reason for a second scuba tank and regulator that might or might not be smaller than your primary back gas tank?"

:)
Fair enough!
