It's much easier to just pick out a prominent rock or piece of coral and hang over it until the boat comes back. No need to go for that wild ride.

Lesson learned! It IS a wild ride!

If you store your alternate properly, you'll always know where to find it. Back when I used a standard octo setup, I always knew where my alternate was. It never dragged behind me.

No doubt, ...the neck bungee is not the “only” acceptable way to stow your alt-2nd.. it’s just a good proven option, and as become the standard in my diving circles. I have never had a run-away 2nd stage either, but I have certainly seen it happen. And for me.. the added complexity/risk associated with diving CCR, I damn sure don’t want to have to go looking for my bail out reg, if I need to get off the loop fast.

With regards to the bungee necklace, we put a piece of whipping on the end. A wire tie would probably work as well. This allows you to pull the reg closer during the dive and loosen it when taking it off. You can’t do this with the silicone necklace.

We started putting the bungee thru the top of the exhaust deflector as previously mentioned after seeing it at a dive show. It works really well. Since we sometimes use the exhaust port to mount a GoPro, it also prevents that from being lost inadvertently.

@tbone1004 thanks for listing this.

Your suggestion with the pony is interesting. Right now I undo both clips at the surface when they are ready to receive it, but it gets tricky when its rough with both hands occupied. I can see how doing it as you suggests will have it out of the way when I surface since it will be lower and then I only have one clip to undo to hand it up. I'll probably be nervous about reaching down to unclip it and not finding it there the 1st few times though. LOL

If for some unlikely reason you go OOG, your dominant hand is going to instinctively go to the secondary in your mouth. If a panicked diver steals your secondary, your hand is going to do the same thing. If you are donating the reg in your mouth, your hand is again right there.

In all cases, what you want (what you really, really want) is just below your hand. An octo in the triangle just doesn't float my boat.

I attach my primary to my right Dring with bolt snap and attach the bungee to the bolt snap as well.
I pull off the bungee from my back over front.

The 90 degree ones that only swivel in one degree of freedom are not as reliable as the ball swivel. We have had many that have oring issues.

Take a look at these by Xsscuba. We have been using them for a couple of years under demanding technical diving conditions and have not had any problems.
