It's much easier to just pick out a prominent rock or piece of coral and hang over it until the boat comes back. No need to go for that wild ride.

If you store your alternate properly, you'll always know where to find it. Back when I used a standard octo setup, I always knew where my alternate was. It never dragged behind me.
If for some unlikely reason you go OOG, your dominant hand is going to instinctively go to the secondary in your mouth. If a panicked diver steals your secondary, your hand is going to do the same thing. If you are donating the reg in your mouth, your hand is again right there....the neck bungee is not the “only” acceptable way to stow your alt-2nd.. it’s just a good proven option, ...
