Not that I’m advocating diving beyond your NDL, I’m just asking...

If you push your Teric (or I suppose any shearwater product) past NDL and now it’s telling you that you should deco for X minutes at 10 feet..

1) Should you go to your safety stop depth of 20’ and begin your safety stop, assuming the deco obligation will be reduced / satisfied during your safety stop?

Or

2) Go to 10 feet and hold your depth for X minutes until your obligation is fulfilled and then descend to your safety stop depth and hold until fulfilled?

You can do the stops anywhere (within reason) below the ceiling, but they will take longer. On the other hand if there is a big sea you may not be able to go shallow.

You could satisfy your deco obligation at any shallow depth, it will take longer at 20 feet (why is your safety stop at 20 feet?) than it would at 10 feet.

I guess I wrote that incorrectly. My Teric begins the safety stop counter once I have ascended shallower than 20’. I usually hang out around 15’ during my SS.

We will “occasionally” get the 1min or 2min at 10ft required deco warnings but so far it has always gone away after a 5min @ 20ft safety stop...

Your deco stops go away after doing your deco stops?

Maybe I should try to sound less sarcastic, but your punctuation, quoting of “occasionally” and ending with ... make this sound like a nudge nudge wink wink “we are being so naughty” sort of a thing.

I am all for people learning to do deco and doing the deco required but people need to understand when they are actually doing deco.

So, when the NDL his zero and you have a non trivial time to surface, or your computer is showing a ceiling, or your computer is showings stops, that is not a warning. That is actual deco. It ought to be respected. It might be gone by the time you get to the stop depth, depending on your depth and ascent rate, but it was still there and preventing you surfacing if as issue arises. Something to be treated seriously.

YOUR DECO STOPS SUPERSEDE YOUR SAFETY STOP!!!!

If you blow your NDL and it calls for a deco stop, you do the deco stops it tells you to. If it tell you to stop at 20 feet, you stop at 20 feet until it tells you to move up to your next stop. At the very least, if you don't know what deco is or why you're doing it or where you're supposed to be doing it, DO WHAT YOUR COMPUTER TELLS YOU.

So, I'm sure you already knew that you you are simply satisfying your 10 foot deco obligation with your stop at 20 feet. You don't have direct access to the surface when you have deco at 10 feet.
