@joshk just checked, the sidemount "ready to dive" is 30lbs, so the 40lbs must be the shipping weight that they quoted which sounds like it has the bp/w, regulators, etc.

Gotcha. The backmount version has a bunch of unnecessary metal on it. Tank brackets alone are probably 8lbs. Stripped (head, no loop, no sorb, sidemount base) it's super lightweight and I like that for traveling.

My SF2, including the head, loop with a Shrimp, body, cylinder mounting brackets, and a socket driver for re-assembly, weighs in at exactly 49.8# in a Pelican case (I believe the case is a 1610 or 1650, not entirely sure though, but can double check when I get home tonight). Cayman Air has a 50# limit, so it's perfect. The regs, backplate and wing go carry-on.

I have a few of those cases (1650), they are great. But empty they weigh almost 25 lbs so I can't travel with them. Between a pair of divers we had 150lbs worth of checked bags, another 150lbs in carry-ons, and ~35lbs each in a backpack.

You lose over half a cubic foot of internal volume and it's still a 15lbs case. They are great for storage/shipping, not great for travel in my use cases.
 
Pelicans generally suck for air travel. Unless Uncle Sugar is paying for your luggage, they're not the greatest. That being said, sometimes they're a necessary evil. When I'm traveling with my camera gear, I bite the bullet and just accept the fact that it's probably gonna cost me.

However, if you're flying with a rebreather, chances are the extra baggage fees are worth it, and you have the disposable income to pay for an extra bag.

I pack the SF2 head/scrubber/counterlung into a carry on and surround it with regs for padding. Put a couple light canisters in there, a big ring of all my boltsnaps and hardware, and cover it with my backplate. Voila, a 75lbs carry on. Only works with domestic airlines, Interjet et. al. tend to frown on the excess weight.
 
Yeah, it's floated around a few times to make taking sorb on trips easier.
Rinsing 2L soda bottles with water 3x would be fine with me, triple rinsing is SOP for disposing of leftover lab stock supplies usually. The narrow necks would be a royal pain for me though.
If I was going this route, 48oz Nalgene bottles or just double ziplock bagging would be more appealing.
 
To be fair this is maybe two scrubbers so I don't see why I wouldn't just bring a keg.
