Lion Air ang Garuda excess bagage fee

Hi Guys,

I have booked my internal flights for my trip and noticed that the flights Manado-Labuhan Bajo and Labujan Bajo have a limit of 6kg (cabin) ang 10kg (checked). I think you can check another bag but can't find the extra fee...

How can a diver with gear is supposed to stay in those limits? Do you guys know what the extra fees are for overweight luggages?

Does it give you an option to purchase additional pre-paid baggage? Even if not the overage fees are not that bad compared to what they would charge everywhere else.

Garuda gives you an additional free bag with up to 23kg if it's scuba equipment in addition to your regular allowance. It may be affected by the size of the plane though but that is the general rule.

I have been able to sneak by the carry on limit - but it's because it's camera gear. I open it and show them before they even ask me to weigh it and they let me through.....For carry on, I highly recommend getting a ScottEVest product. you can shove items into your jacket and put the weight there. I carry it as my bail out option or for commtuer jets where I can't take my camera bag on al the time. I cram my gear into the pockets. They make men's stuff too. Don't buy full priced, they always have sales.

I book my flights to and in Indonesia on one ticket with Garuda so I always have the extra sport luggage on the internal flights.

Limit of 10kgs looks like LionAir policy, sorry but you're gonna have to pay and pay... Manado-LBJ is not a direct flight so you'll have to pay for Manado Bali then for Bali LBJ.
Airlines in Indonesia do not comply to the luggage piece policy but to the luggage weight policy.
Over 10kgs, you may probably have to pay somewhere like 3USD/add kg for the Manado-Bali leg and 2 USD/add Kg for the Bali-LBJ leg.

In the end the ticket cost between Garuda and LionAir will be within a 10% difference except that in one case you will get better check in process, no paying desk to look for, more confortable seats, a free meal aboard and your schedule on time.

Full disclosure, we are in the minority of airline passengers that travel in ASE Asia. We use almost every domestic airline in Indonsia. Although we might prefer Garuda, we have taken Lion Air numerous times and have yet to pay excess baggage fee or comment on our carry-on items. I always take a small backpack and a separate zip bag for my free dive fins. Occasionally, the airlines will ask me to check my fins, but I assure them that the long fins fit in the overhead compartments. It’s an adventure, we took a a Lion Flight from Ambon and the nearby Garuda flight was cancelled without notice. Go figure.

You are VERY lucky Charlie or you speak good bahasa, every year in the last decade I paid and paid Lion Air for excess luggage, especially when 3 years ago Garuda had the clever idea to remove their sports luggage allowancy that strangely reappaeared the year after.
Then I decided I had enough of LionAir. I stll prefer to fly Alor with Transnusa for instance than LionAir, at least you can speak with them and they (sometimes) listen.

I got away with carrying 2 backpacks (1 on my chest & 1 on my back). Of course speaking fluent bahasa Indonesia helps

Wait. You are just now telling me this? We're going out there together next time! Planning fail on my part.

Though, honestly, I have not had issues not speaking Bahasa and we are pretty intrepid.

took wings air for DPS-LBJ round trip. was about 100 usd cheaper than garuda. plane was on time, although the line at baggage checkin at dps for wings kinda sucked.

i was 5kg or so over the weight limit. they asked what was in my bag and when i said scuba gear, they didn't bother to charge me. ymmv. same happened on the return.
