Bullets against divers' union

COZUMEL, November 18.- Local Balean of the Unified Union of Workers and Aquatic and Underwater Sports and Services in General (Sutadas); Three shots hit the glass door. There is a line of investigation not disclosed by the Ministerial Police of the State Attorney General's Office.
Almost at two o'clock in the morning of this Saturday, the 911 service received the report of firearms detonations on 8th street north between 55 and 60 of the colony on April 10th. Said report brought with it that elements of the Ministerial Police and the Municipal Police were sent to the place. The attack was against a new union group having little time to have emerged.
In a statement provided by Néstor Iván Segundo Pérez, commander of the Ministerial Police, when carrying out the first verifications to the site, they found a pair of bullet casings belonging to the .380 caliber automatic of the ACP brand in golden color which ended up secured by elements of expert services.
They noticed that, in the lower left portion of the glass door marked with blacksmith work, there were three bullet impacts grouped together at close range, as a result of the detonations carried out against it.
He denied that a blanket with some text referring to the criminal act has been found in the place, pointing out that it is not linked to organized crime or drug activities, but rather that it is something alien to these variants.
They are waiting for the owner of the premises to go to the General Prosecutor's Office to file their corresponding complaint, despite the fact that the same premises is rented to the organization "Sutadas" of which their union leader Pedro Centeno has already come to ratify his complaint . However, he does not own the premises and must be the owner who goes to prove the legal possession of it.
The commander of the Ministerial Police announced that he already has some line of investigation and that shortly some people will be summoned to interview them, in order to know if they had any connection with the bullet attack. Given this fact, the investigation folder was opened for the crime of damages based on file 1304/11/2017.

On the bright side, there has been an increase in the presence of federal police on the island.

Secret meeting in Cozumel

COZUMEL, November 18 .- A small group of federal deputies, arrived in Cozumel to hold some talks on security with military representatives assigned to the island, apparently they make up the Security Commission in the Chamber of Deputies.
Under total secrecy, a group of federal deputies allegedly belonging to the Public Security Commission, arrived at the municipality of Cozumel after noon this Saturday, with the intention of holding meetings with representatives of the Naval Sector, Military Garrison, and Base Military Aircraft # 4.
These people could be seen a short time outside the building of the Military Naval Sector, located on Rafael E. Melgar Avenue between 7 and 11 South, where they were visiting the facilities and holding a meeting to discuss the issues related to security.
It transpired that it was a general panorama that they were dealing with, not specifically of Cozumel but of the work of these federal agencies in this area of Quintana Roo, although all this was done under a hermetic protocol, since the topics to be discussed were not disclosed. the media and public opinion.
For the moment there has been no communication from the Naval Sector, the Military Garrison, or the Military Air Base itself, referring to these issues that were addressed during the meetings. It was only known through unofficial sources that the meeting took place only this Saturday. Notwithstanding the results, agreements, or others, will be handled by the deputies themselves who arrived and the heads of these instances.
During their stay, the deputies from whom the names were not provided were transferred by rented vehicles to reach the military installations.

I consider Coz to be a safe city, but it is a city. If you think Coz is a crime free shangri la you are mistaken. That said, I still have no problem going to 65 th for tacos at midnight or walking back from La perlita after closing.

Keep your toes in the sand not your heads.
Safe travels and diving

To answer the OP's question. Yep. It's coming....

We were in Cozumel last month, as we walked to town on several occasions we were asked about buying drugs from young adult males saying they had a "full pharmacy". It was always the same place, in front of the telecomm building between Senor Frogs and the Ti Tanzinite. Doesn't take much of an imagination to know what's going on. Wasn't there a shooting at Senor Frogs several months ago?

I personally feel safer walking around Coz than most areas in the states after dark and during the day. The drug wars are about cartels fighting each other for turf and eliminating free-lancers in tourist areas. Tourists are not targeted by cartels in turf wars. That's not to say a tourist may not get caught in cross-fire but getting caught in cross fire is far more common in the states than Mexico. The reality is if the cartels scare all the tourists away they won't have a drug consuming customer base to supply in Cancun. You're average Mexican can't afford an expensive drug habit... That's why the tourist areas are fought over and why they smuggle it into the states.

I just got back from there yesterday. Cozumel is business as usual, as mentioned above Islands are a bad place for bad guys and Playa had heavily armed federales all over the place where the gringos hang out, like 5th ave.

I am concerned. Recall Cancun used to be very safe as did Acapulco. So it is a concern. Being an island helps a lot but these problems seem to be spreading at an alarming rate throughout the region.

Y'all better not fly through Atlanta to get to your diving destination. The news here is filled with murders and home invasions. Stolen luggage at the airport is a problem, too. All of our law enforcement blames it on drugs and gangs (in that order).

Seriously..., this guy shows up in Cancun and there's a murder an hour later? I admit, I don't follow Cancun murders, but that just seems a little off to me.
