I realize that most of the 20+ posts since the OP said he would contact me have been dedicated to stopping him from making such a dreadful decision. I promise that in working with him I will try not to kill him, and if I do well enough with him, perhaps someday he will be able to swim close enough to a GUE diver to reach out, touch the hem of his dry suit, and be healed.

Thanks very much to everyone who has contributed. @boulderjohn and I have been communicating, and when both of our schedulesite meet up, I'll be taking his TechRec class. In the future, when and if Poseiden smiles upon my wallet, I will be looking at other classes as well. I don't think someone can have too much quality training, or find something in their skills to improve.
