Depending on your size, you might find that buying a wetsuit is better than dealing with a rental that doesn't quite fit. If you're on FB, there's a scuba swap & shop sale group with lots of good deals.

Cool, I'll look that up thanks for the tip!

BTW, what are the best weights for a BC with integrated weight pockets, like on the ScubaPro Knighthawk?

Any of the soft weights should do the trick.

What size are you?? I have 6.5 or 7mm that I haven't used in years

I just bought the XS Scuba soft weights and I really like them. The only issue with the weight pockets is the trim pockets are a bit small. I needed 5 Lbs per trim pocket at first and a the 5 LB soft weight wouldn't fit but the regular hard weight did but it was snug.

Soft or Hard it doesn't really make a difference for the integrated weight pockets of the BC. Soft are noticeably more expensive if buying new, slightly more expensive if buying used.

Hard weights dry faster, can be used on a weight belt, and are cheaper.
Soft weights-"nicer", a little more versatile in that they can be put into pockets or added to v weight pouches, take a longer time to dry.

Check Ebay and Craig's List.

This guy sells nice quality hard weights

What I think to be the ideal sequence of purchases.

1. Wetsuit/exposure equipment - very personal and this way you can always ensure proper fit and no peepee
2. Mask - arguably the most important piece of gear. Needs to be fit perfectly
3. Fins - somewhat same reasons as above
4. Regulator and spg - could be #1 really but can be pricey. Buy quality from the start
5. Computer
6. BCD - match to the environment you will most be using it in. Everyone here will recommend bp/wing. If you go down that alley consider wing size and backplate material.
7. Bits and bobs to round out your gear. Torches, knives, whatever.

Hey - I wanted to thank everyone here for their advice and tips. I snagged a nearly new ScubaPro Knighthawk BC with Air2, a ScubaPro MK25 S600 regulator, and an Oceanic gauge console. I'll take them all in to my local shop when they get here for servicing before use of course. So I think that nearly rounds out my kit. No tanks in my future, though I will need a 7mil suit at some point for the Blue Hole here in New Mexico.
