I am setting up the NAUTILUS LIFE LINE CHAT CHANNEL:

I assume this is the channel one would use to chat with a boat in the vicinity if you need assistance - ?

What channel should I use for Indonesia?

ALSO: What is an MMSI number, how do I get mine? When I follow the directions to open the APP tab ad click "Customize Settings", it gives the MMSI uber as all zeroes. Apparently I am supposed to get it some somewhere and enter it?

VHF (Nautilus Lifeline Chat Channel) has the obvious advantage that you can have a two way conversation and might be able to summon help from a nearby boat and have the reassurance that a rescue is on its way - PLB has the advantage of not being limited by range (a VHF will be very limited in this regard when down at water level) and the PLB also sends a homing signal to rescuers - With VHF, rescuers may be able to use Radio Direction Finding along with modulated/encoded GPS info from the Nautilus unit to get a precise fix on you, but only if you're transmitting. PLB also has the advantage that it will carry on sending your position if you lose the ability to talk. And an activated PLB signal is always monitored versus no guarantee that someone will be on a marine VHF radio and hear your call on a handheld short-antenna Nautilus Lifeline, especially if you've drifted away in worst case combination with your diveboat initiating a search in the wrong direction -somewhere out of range 8 -10 miles in remote waters away from each other. . .

Bill, as back-up to your Nautilus, just purchase a PLB with Dive Canister in Indonesia (and Unique Identification Number coded for YOU in the region of Indonesia, as soon as registered as a resident there). Well, I found one situation where a Nautilus Life is useless.

Upon arrival at Murex Bangka, I asked "what channel should I use?" Blank stares. "We don't have radios". No radio on the boat, no radio at the resort.

That was the main contention I had with the Lifeline. You could be relying on the same people to rescue you that lost you in the first place. And if there's no radio or it's not turned on, well the lifeline is useless. And the new lifeline only has distress capabilities. Many boats are still using the standard radio without that technology. My boat has a standard radio. No distress.

Admittedly, the decision to just buy the canister was pretty easy because I've owned the PLB for several years as a rec. angler.

Sorry for laughing, but I am not surprised. Even in the area I normally dive in the Middle East, radios are illegal on dive boats (go figure!) and most dive ops rely on mobile phones.

Well, I had ordered a body glove nautilis life line and then heard that they will be coming out with a newer that will have the chat. So I was a little bummed that I was getting the old one, as I'm not sure how the support will be. Now I received an alert from amazon saying my order is delayed and I can cancel. So yay for me, I will see what lifeline comes up with as I do like the idea of being able to hail the boat before blasting my sos to outer space . I do have the plb1 (rescue me) already. I do want 2 different systems, one for me and one for my buddy so if we are separated we can each still get help, and if we are together we can start with one resource and then the other if the battery wears out.
