There's local diver that uses a 6 or 8 inch length of PVC pipe with a slot cut in the top as a faux can light when he doesn't use his light on a dive. Matches the size of his can light, so muscle memory for tasks is the same.

See post #9 upthread where I linked to a commercial version of that. PVC pipe is definitely cheaper.

I've been using the 7' hose for years. Recently I decided to switch to the 5' hose. I now prefer it because the routing is under my arm, rather than having to tuck it under my waist strap.

Ding, we have a winner.

I've always tucked it under the weight on my belt. PVC pipe sounds good if that's not an option.

I put a 70 degree (aka 110 degree) adapter between my primary 2nd stage and my 7' hose yesterday and did a dive with it. That change made all the difference for me between my 7' hose being barely long enough to have slack to tuck in my waist belt versus having enough slack that it tucks in far enough to stay in there reliably. I have a regular rubber hose and with it coming straight out the side of the reg, and with enough slack to be able to turn my head to the left without tugging, the hose would only tuck enough behind my belt that it was barely in there Too much moving around in the water and it would often pop out. Changing to the angle adapter that lets the hose come straight back from the reg along the side of my head gave me just the right amount of extra slack.

If you are not diving overhead environments where a 7' hose is needed a 5' hose is all that is needed and eliminates the issue of where to place the extra 2' of hose. If you are teaching or DMing a 5' or 7' hose is not practicle if your shop wants you to wear a snorkel.

The size hose you want also varies by your size. A 6'6" linebacker and a 4'11" gymnast really need different lengths.

I agree. I have seen too many incidents (e.g. a mask being separated from the DM's head) where the snorkel interfered with the deployment of a long(er) hose, routed across the chest and behind the head (as it should be). A very reasonable alternative, which meets PADI standards, AND allows the DM to use a contemporary gear configuration, is a folding snorkel (Pocket Snorkel) placed either in a pocket (preferred) or bungeed to the BCD.

I would probably rather have a 5' hose. But, for my tech training, my instructor required a 7' hose. So, that's what I have. It works. Especially now. I'm not sure it's really worth the money to switch to a 5' hose at this point. Especially since I do dive NC wrecks a few times a year. I don't do anything more than lightzone penetrations. But, it would still be possible that I could be somewhere that would require single file swimming to get out.
