I was listening to the radio last night and heard for the first time the cover version performed by Disturbed of the Simon & Garfunkel classic, The Sound of Silence. I thought it might be the best cover version of a song I had ever heard. That guy has pretty good vocal range for a heavy metal singer.

I was trying to think of other contenders. Whitney Houston's version of I Will Always Love You was pretty great. As was Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares 2 U. All three songs are notably different from the original. Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah is great, but quite similar to the original.

Anyone else have any favourite cover versions of songs (classic or otherwise)?

Manfred Mann's Earth Band actually covered "Blinded by the light" originally by Bruce Springsteen. Most people don't know that one. And John Mayer did a cover of "free fallin" (Tom Petty) that is amazing

Cream's cover of "Crossroads Blues" (Robert Johnson)
Santana's cover of "Black Magic Woman" (Fleetwood Mac)
Jimi Hendrix's cover of "All Along the Watchtower" (Dylan)
Creedance Clearwater Revival's cover of "I Put a Spell on You" (Screamin' Jay Hawkins)

Led Zeppelin's cover of "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You" (Joan Baez)
(Lots of Led Zeppelin's songs are covers to some extent, for which they were frequently sued)
Ike and Tina Turner's cover of "Proud Mary" (Creedance Clearwater Revival)
Eric Clapton's cover of "Cocaine" (JJ Cale)

Not a favorite but Rock On has been covered by several bands - I have Blondie's recent version. Also was done by Def Leopard, Smashing Pumpkins and a couple lesser known groups. Originally by David Essex in the 60's?.

One I sort of like is Pearl Jam's cover of The Who classic Love Reign O'er Me

All along the Watchtower is another - originally by Dylan, covered by Hendrix and later covered by Dave Matthews then U2 on Rattle & Hum.
