Funny how this thread has turned from a question about PADI training rules to which 'face of sidemount' is the best.

Ha!

Such is the way with SB. Threads meander.

Isn't it all related?

No, the plot is still muddy...the book was by Jill and Brian Kakuk. I've been fortunate to have dived with both of them....two minds in tune, and both are terrific people.

My bad! You are correct. But they did put out a dvd together..

split fin frog kick in the preview

I'm guessing Jill and Jeff don't read ScubaBoard, or they would know that it's impossible to do a frog kick in split fins :)

It's possible but most people have never seen it... due to the silt clouds, I'd guess.

"Yeah, I'd love to save you dude. Really. But you see... I've only been trained to rescue divers wearing the exact same gear that I use. Sorry, and good luck."

How would surfacing a diver - or responding to a diver at the surface - in a SM rig be any different than one in a jacket BC?

Actually there is a difference. As part of our final cave course (maybe it was deco) our instructor required rescue practice. I can say from first hand knowledge that rescuing an unconscious diver in sm is absolutely different than back mount. Even the instructor was surprised. He briefed us with his ideas on how best to handle a toxxed diver unconscious on the bottom and how to handle them in order to be able to use their bc to aid recovery. He had never run a practice with sm students. Due to the wide profile of a Sm diver we really had to adjust from his instruction. He actually thought we were nuts when we said his suggestion didn't work. He tried it and ended up learning a new skill himself.

I think any good instructor would be happy to have a mixed class as he could illustrate the differences of different systems.

My last class of students also did some rescue skills for the first time in sidemount. It was an eye opener for them. This was an advanced nitrox and deco class.
