thanks for the info on how to change.

now please explain the problem with the pull dump. wouldn't a little Loctite on the threads prevent it from coming loose?

I like the convenience of the pull dump so I need to be educated as to the flaws. If it's a matter of it getting smashed couldn't that also happen to a elbow?

I'm willing to make the modification just a little more info would be appreciated.

Unnecessary added failure points. Generally speaking, the chance of failure is pretty low and the impact rather minimal (if you are OK with a BCD that will not hold air). I replaced mine quite some time ago and don't miss it at all. My wife/buddy insists on keeping hers so I carry a spare on trips.

The issue with the pull dump is that you are pulling down on the rubber of the corrugated hose, which can cause tears or cause it to become disconnected from the point at which it screws into the wing. A common problem is with students or newer divers that are not placing that pull dump vent at their highest point and want to gorilla that pull dump when they don't feel the gas venting from the wing. If you need a pull dump, go a little head down and use the butt dump. There's no need for a pull dump on a wing.

If I understand your original post, the round plastic screw cap on the end of the dump assembly came off. The same thing happened to me in the Bahamas with my wife's wing (I was washing gear in the shower post-dive, so found the cap but lost the washer). When I talked to Dive Rite they said the screw on end caps are extremely tight and hard to remove. Some do some off. I just make sure everything connected to the wing is screwed on tight.

My wife's wing wouldn't hold air without the missing washer. I swapped wings with her (I had a bigger wing), she was happy and I never bothered trying to inflate the wing, but really got my weighting dialed in. Like anything else, it's just something to check pre-dive. I'm happy with my Dive Rite gear and keep buying their products

The first thing I did after receiving my DR wing was to replace the Pull Dump Valve with a plain elbow.
One less area to check/test for leak.
Keep it simple.

Good reason to carry a spare washer.

What are these pull dumps on DR wings of which you speak? I have three DR wings which came with just elbows all those years ago when I bought them: trek wing, tek doubles wing and original Nomad SM wing. They are putting needless failure points on some of their smaller wings now?

Actually, the locktite or just a single drop of gorilla glue (so you can get it off when you really want it off) was a suggestion that a dive shop owner on the boat made. I'm definitely going to be doing that on at least one of my wings.

For sure, I am an absolute fan of Dive Rite. It's made my diving experience exponentially enjoyable, I just was concerned about this failure point. How many dives did your wife's wing have on it before this happened? Was Dave concerned about it? Or did it seem like it was a no big deal sorta thing?

I had the option of either a simple elbow or a pull dump corrugated hose connection when I purchased my DR wing.
So yes you can order extra failure points with that...

so, you never answered the question.. It was not a Dive Rite failure at all. It was a loose fitting that you failedto check.. Very common to happen and other components can come unscrewed as well. Rather than gluing something, why not just learn to check it?

locktite on the threads would keep it from coming loose, but it would also prevent you from being able to change the diaphragm easily in a failure.

Pull dump- too many failure points. If that diaphragm at the back gets a nick in it, or you are going through a silty situation or it gets sand in there and doesn't seal properly, then you have a leak the whole time of both incoming water and outgoing air. Bad news bears.
Technically yes, the elbow can crack, but there is a lot less plastic, and the plastic is a lot thicker so it is less likely to crack given the same forces.

The convenience factor is negated when you learn to dump your wing properly which is when people realize they don't need to pick the damn thing over their head. Also puts a lot less strain on your wing since you aren't yanking on it to dump.
