Returning found gear

Something of value, absolutely! I would post it here or, if it's marked, attempt to find the owner.
Something little, like a weight or tank boot, probably not, unless it's marked.
I used to be married to a horrible sociopath that would steal anything, I mean anything. He had stolen buildings from Home Depot, ATVs from houses that had been closed by ATF, insurance scams for vehicles, it was bad!He would even steal one of those generators or an outhouse off a construction site! I swear, he'd steal a backhoe off the road if he could!
Once, when we were diving in Mexico, he took a DM's BC. I felt so bad. But, if you'd known my ex, you'd known I would not be able to return the BC without danger to myself. I wish there was a way to track the poor guy down but that was so long ago.
I can only hope Karma is real!

If it is valuable, then I would most definitely return it. If it is something cheap, or in poor condition, like a mask, boltsnap, weights/weightbelt, then I may keep it. Emphasis on the condition part. If I find a mask that has clearly been underwater for a while, I am going to take it home, clean it up, and see if I can get a few bucks for it.
But if it is valuable, or it look like it might have been left there recently (hey look, someone "lost" a deco bottle on the beach!), then I will try to return it. Its easy to do when you have a regional forum

I lost a really nice knife in Bonaire two years ago. If anybody found it. It was probably either at Red Slave or Oil Slick.

I am an advocate of returning found gear, especially since someone went to the bother of returning my lost GoPro.

However, when I found this at 20ft in the Salt River, I was not sure as to how to even attempt to return it.



All I can say is that whoever lost it was probably quite upset.



By the way, I returned it to the deep.

I will return anything I find and leave things I find with the local shop if practical.

I do not like loosing things and do my best to return lost stuff to the owner. A bolt snap.... not so much but anything of value absolutely.

Do unto others and all that.

Return it always or do my darn best to try any way. If I can't find the rightful owner after a while, I'll donate it to more "needy" divers. I never keep if for myself, or try to make a buck. I figure what goes around comes around.

I once left my smart phone in a bathroom at an airport after just landing in the States from an international flight on a diving trip. I had already gone through customs and picked up my luggage and was heading for the parking lot when I realized I didn't have my cell phone. I reported it to lost and found at the airport (yeah, right, you may be thinking). A security officer asked me what flight I had flown and said he would re-trace my trail from the concourse to the baggage claim area to see if it had turned up. (I was skeptical, of course, but also a believer in anyone at least making the gesture.)

It wasn't thirty minutes later when my name was paged to return to lost and found, and viola' he had my phone!!
Yeah, I believe what goes around comes around. I return anything I find.

I found a pouch of soft weights off a BC a couple of summers ago. dropped it off at the LDS. some one there said an instructor had lost some weights. A dive buddy lost some weights last month, looking for them I found a BC knife. it was a cheapy, so I gave it to him. It had been in the water awhile. found a dollar on the same dive, kept that (no name). If anyone finds a single plana avanti at green bridge in Newport, another dive buddy has lost two in the same spot.( white and blue)
