So do the specialties have to be PADI or can someone just show up with all the requirements but from different agencies and pay the $50 to get the card? For the record-I am not planning on doing this-just asking.

No they all have to be PADI Specialties.. Part of the Marketing strategy :)

Cheers,
Roger

You just unwittingly proved my pooint. 50 dives isn't squat for experience. I've seen plenty of horrible divers who proved something to some instructor somewhere.

I've only taken 4 classes because that's what it takes to do rescue and get nitrox. I have decided that it's a pointless excercise to take altitude diver, boat diver, drift diver, multilevel diver, night diver, PPB, ectera because I learned that all on my own.

So by your judgement that 50 dive wonder is a better diver then me. I wouldn't bet on it if I was you.

You keep confusing your opinion with fact. Not to mention telling me what my opinion is. I have no idea what you are, nor do I care. You are not the topic. And I dont mean that in a uncivil way. Just stick to the topic.

Does that have anything to do with how easy I've read that it is to find counterfeit cards over there?

chrpai,

I will assume that you are asking a serious question, many many many items are counterfited in Asia(clothes, purses, shoes etc etc etc. I

MHO the reason for waiving of the fee is two fold, 1. The customer has already paid for a minimum of 8 certs at least 5 of them being to PADI. 2. Marketing to help promote the number of folks taking specialties..

Cheers,
Roger

agilis, I'd dive with you anytime. Tossed the logbook in 92 and other than being the only OW in my crew, I seem to manage just fine.

It's an inexpensive card. If you are a dive pro, you won't have to do any training to get the card, just fill out an application and pay a filing fee. Then, if you are on a boat and have to show a C card, you flash the master diver card instead of Divemaster. The boat knows you have some skills but doesn't lean on you to take care of the less experienced folks. After all, you are on vacation- right?

Absolutely was a serious question. Yes, understand how much counterfeiting goes on and I understand that PADI is undoubtly a master at marketing and understanding the market for their product. They know what the market will bare.

Over here they figure the market will bare $37 for a virutal ecard. I won't pay it personally.

It amazes me that so many "superior" divers get so ruffled by someone who wants a PADI certification. The OP did ask for opinions, OK you think PADI is a rip off because you taught yourself everything back in the day or used another agency. State your opinion and move on unless you feel the need to prove something. If you feel that need, perhaps you are not as secure in your beliefs as you claim. Training AND experience are the best combo and anyone who discounts one or the other is coming up short. After spending thousands of dollars for diving, gear, travel, training...who cares if he wants to spend $50 to say he is a Master Scuba Diver. Get the card, you can show it to your grandkids!!

And to -hh, I just don't care for 7 mil wetsuits and 5' viz just to put another page in logbook. I can show you all the rusted out Vdubs you want to see without being 130' in the quarry. Might even find one that's drivable. Not hatin, just sayin

Posted this in another forum in response to very similar negativity about MD.

I am close to your 50 dive wonder mark. I've trained with PADI. I've supported the hell out of my local dive shop and DRIS. The instructor I've been working with is awesome. So far I have taken PPB, Deep (and yes, it is a necessity for some trips) EANx, and planning to take Drysuit (why learn it the hard way when you can learn it right?), wreck and night (and wont even need this for MD) as well as rescue. If all goes well, by the end of the month, I'll apply for my MD. I think the 5 (6) specialties I will have are all worthwhile in that in each I learned a great deal, not just about the specialty, but about diving in general.

Do I think there's anything special about MD? Not really. Is shows that I have taken the time to learn what I am doing, but not that I necessarily know what I am doing. No matter how much experience at have, I'm sure i'll one day do something stupid (like a giant stride without a regulator in my mouth) I think the most important part is the training I have received and the great friends I have made, including my instructor. Why wouldnt I want him to teach me as much as possible?

What I have really learned is that theres a whole hell of a lot that I still need to learn. I plan to keep taking corses, possibly through TDI and do some extended bottom time on many of the great wrecks that I have seen and heard of, but thats for the future. I won't be doing this on my own, I'll be looking for a mentor, and keeping in mind there are lots of things I don't know that i don't know.

Kool aid, sure pass me some. I'm having an awesome time.
