No permit is needed to dive at the Blue Heron Bridge at night. The popular areas for diving the bridge are not part of any park.... marine or otherwise. A permit is required to park at Phil Foster Park after dark. Vehicles with trailers require a parking permit at all times. They may launch and recover their vessel 24 hours a day. Should you decide to come by Kayak or paddle board, there are regulations for operating at night.

Congratulations Kevin you have found something rarer than the frogfish. Saw my 1st Spotfin (found by SK) last year. Found my own a month ago. They have been seen both West & East side BHB but not too often.
Deb

Thanks, Deb. :D I *do* love jawfish, but froggies, for some reason, really have a hold on me. I've seen so few. . . Glad to hear that somebody knows something about the spotfins. Interestingly, Steven is the one who was recently helping me clarify duskies versus bandeds.

Something that has thrown me off in trying to figure these things out is one of the pics on Fishbase that shows the "diamond" pattern that I saw on this "largish" guy IMG_9158wa | Flickr - Photo Sharing! - which I had assumed must have been a "banded" based on size - was also on a dusky at Opistognathus whitehursti, Dusky jawfish : aquarium - and *he* *also* has a big spot on his dorsal.

It just *kills* me that I don't live down there close and have the chance to be an "insider" and *know* about such (apparently) common knowledge. :depressed: Anyway, I just ran over and processed all the shots I have of him and threw them up on Flickr. Spotfin Jawfish (?) (Opistognathus robinsi) at the Blue Heron Bridge - a set on Flickr

Kevin
outsider

addendum: saw him on Thursday, the 14th, but back in the same spot on Friday and Saturday, he didn't seem to be around.

Damm, I've been too focused on the mouth full of eggs for exact ID's, plus they rarely ever give me the full centerfold shot.
Now besides finding Yellow Headed Jawfish at BHB (common on my deeper reefs/sand edges here)
I have to look for Dusky, Spotted and "gasp" Swordtail Jawfish!!!!!
Thanks Deb.

Kev-

This pic sorta looks like the orange one. . . Shortfin Pipefish photographed by Michael Lawrence
The snub nose has me leaning toward the genus Cosmocampus for it. Regardless, thought it was cute. :D

Some of the pics of sargassum pipefish seem to bring to mind the whitish one. And, there was lots of sargassum rolling by last weekend. . .

Hey folks, can we please have some temperature reports. Getting ready to pack some gear and head south. Would like to leave the drysuit behind.

(oops. thought it didn't get posted, but now see that it's at the bottom of another post)

Water temps at 83 degrees today with very nice viz and blue water. An easy 30 ft viz early on and dropped off just a bit toward end of slack tide.
A very good diving day at the bridge !

I have been reading through most of the threads on this post and came across the discussions about using BHB as a training local. I can totaly relate to the complaints about the dive instructors with the dozens students. I was in Three Sisters Spring on memorial day and man there where a lot of classes out there. There were more students than anything in the spring head...on memorial day. Anyways, I know everyone has to start out in these classes, and I'm definetly not hating, but man was the water mucked up. So when i read about "rototilling", i just laughed. just sayin.

81deg / 25ft vis (reduced to 5 after a pair of divers swam by and kicked up a major sand storm). Still haven't found any seahorses but I've gotten some tips and will hopefully be out again this weekend. If I'm not mistaken, below is a Bandtail Searobin, 3 Seaweed Blennies, and a scorpionfish (species unknown).

Of course, Reck diver is wrong about this....the submerged lands around Phil foster, where we dive, are park land. I got this from ERM and the Park Service. Maybe in Reckdiver's mind it should not be called a marine park, because that would be a direction toward protection for the environment there, and the greater volume of his posting indicates he is against protecting the marine life in the park....
