Does anyone else think that bitterness on the part of scuba instructors toward their students is pervasive ?

I do not.

But ask if there is bitterness between Instructors and DMs..THAT is another can of worms.

Almost as emotionally charged as bringing up spare air or split fins!

... mostly it comes from the internet. I've yet to meet an instructor in person who feels that way ...

... Bob (Grateful Diver)

I agree.

Pervasive is a pretty strong word. There's a saying about "10% of people are in the wrong occupation", I'm sure scuba instructing is no different, but I think they are the exception not the rule.
Although in the northeast US, I'm not sure instructing even qualifies as an occupation, it's more a labor of love, income-wise(LOL-joke!!!)
As previously mentioned, on the internet, it is easy to read a different intent to a post than intended.
Lastly, there are some "macho" anonymous posters (of all cert levels) who seem to enjoy bragging, belittling etc. Unfortunately, it just comes with the internet, not just scuba diving.

I wonder if a teensy particle in your final para might be related to well to do novice divers who spend a gazillion dollars on the most expensive gear, gadgets and toys, believing this will make them a better safer diver. When the instructor knows that nothing is better than - nor can possibly replace - in water experience and facing a variety of challenges. just a thought. I am not an instructor! Nor even a lowly DM!

Why is it always the ones with less then 100 dives complaining?
Maybe if dived more often, they harden up a bit.....
