I always carry one-- if I drive 2hrs to the ocean and pay $70 for a charter, I'm diving, and I would be pissed if I missed a dive because I left a mask that I already own for bigger dives, at home.

Sounds like a good excuse to get out of the saltwater to me!

I always cary a spare.
Water temperature is irrelevant.

I always carry one, temp really doesn't come into play.

Almost always carry spare one in both cold/warm conditions.
Having said that, the temperature (or more the conditions) of the water has a small effect: when doing family diving in warm tropical water, we usually carry 1 spare for 2. Just in case of jumping out of the boat effect or nasty mask strap.

The other question is for people having prescription mask – do you carry one or 2.

I would imagine we all have more than one in the gear bag James. But not always in a pocket

My backup mask also has a prescription in it

As already said, thinking divers. That's why I carry one when I might have to spend quite a bit of time in the water without, should mine fail or be lost. I also carry a spare on surf entries because I have lost a mask being rolled in the surf, and the backup saved me from missing the dive. Water temperature doesn't have anything to do with it; I've done enough no-mask work in Puget Sound to be pretty much immune to cold water on my face.

Yes, I like some of the free-dive masks, take up a little less room. Look for one that is very durable, maybe a frameless one, I have had frames crack from putting too much pressure on the pocket when climbing onto boats etc.

I'm a thinking diver because I think the odds are pretty much non-existent that I will lose my mask during a dive. The room the mask takes up in the pocket can be much better used by things I am more likely to use, like more spools, more lifting devices, surface contact devices, etc.

Plus I learned in C1 and C2 that a backup mask only lasts about a minute anyway, so why carry one?

if you don't think you need one, don't take one. sounds good to me
