Thanks Mossman, Tunaman, Christi & the others for the advice!
Im set on Coz, sounds like there's lots to do besides the diving & better diving ive experienced so im sure I wont be dissapointed...
Bonaire is out too as for the same reason I dont want Bahamas at this point, why spend way more time & money to get there & diving is the same if not worse than Coz.
Tunaman, Spoke to a kid today at LJ Cove who was just busted by DFG for 7 short bugs... IDIOT!!!
His first time diving for bugs, he was going to measure them at the truck...haha

I've seen a dude get his car impounded for shorties - man, put the measuring thing on the dive light and keep it REAL!! Have fun in Coz, but be careful - it's really easy to catch a disease there, symptoms include daily shopping of airfare and hours spent dreaming of margaritas and 100+ foot viz all year long!!!

Coming from SoCal conditions, I'm sure you'll be fine with Cozumel currents - just don't make the mistake of swimming against it if you don't have to since, unlike in SoCal, you don't have to get back to where you started. And being familiar with Mexico, you won't have to worry about culture shock and familiarizing yourself with local customs/language, so you can concentrate on the diving and the apres-dive. Good choice.

Now you have to make the really tough choices: picking dive op and hotel from the myriad available. You can book hotel and diving separate, or as a package. No-frills vs. over-the-top service. AL80s or bigger? All inclusive, breakfast only, or worry about getting your own meals and drinks a la carte. Or pick a resort like Scubaclub that has it all in one place. Lots of choices and all have advantages and disadvantages.

Rather than asking "Who whould I dive with?" or "Who is the best in Cozumel?", you might want to research the hundreds or thousands of threads already started on these topics. Lots of good information here to give you an overview of what's available and then you can hone in with more specific questions.

(But please don't dismiss Bonaire as in the same class as the Bahamas. It really isn't the same diving as Cozumel, et al., it's entirely different. Cruising around slowly looking for little stuff vs. high speed drift dives, shore dives vs. boat dives, wake up and dive when you want vs. pre-set boat schedule, lots of differences. And what you spend extra on air fare, you make up in savings on the cost of diving, especially if you dive nitrox. Cozumel is great, to be sure, but I've personally never understood why people only dive the same place and never try anything new. It's a big world out there.)

Thanks Mossman!
I dont see deciding on hotel & dive operation decision an overlly tough one. Ive already done the search & seen a few dive op options & my better half really doesnt need a frilly hotel..
Im sure when the time comes to booking something, ill start crunching some numbers & figure if its cheaper to book as a package deal or not.

I was going to comment almost exactly the same thing. Bonaire and Cozumel are like two beautiful women to choose from, except one is a blond and one is a brunette. Slater - once you go to Cozumel, you might get the idea that the island is all about diving, once you go to Bonaire you will experience an island that really is only about diving. Cozumel is a great place to go to, and I'm not knocking it, but Bonaire shore diving can become a religious experience.

Like Mossman we like to bounce back and forth between Cozumel and Bonaire, but for us we also throw in a 3rd place which is Roatan.

It's "Stuart Cove's". Stuart Cove is the name of the person who runs it.

Ok, Ok, ya, whatever! Yes you are correct, I just personally met him here in San Diego just this past Tuesday night at a presention for his dive op..

Yes but also have another addiction which is SD Long Range fishing & our yearly fishing / dive trips to East Cape Baja "Rancho Leonero"
So taking on another sport, the appealing factor of affordability when it come to Coz is a huge ++++

I didn't quite get the religious experience in Roatan so it was just the one visit for me. Still, a lot of that was timing (New Year's, ocean conditions not so hot, emphasis on topside partying) and where we stayed (BIBR), so I do mean to try Cocoview one day or maybe the Bay Island Aggressor or hopefully both. And I've made several trips to Grand Cayman, which has very nice diving and I love the facility at Cobalt Coast though I understand that the diving is superior on the sister islands so they're on my to-do list as well, and then there's Belize, and Turks & Caicos, which both deserve return trips someday, and all the other little jewels I still need to try: Saba, Dominica, St. Lucia, Bequia, and even Curacao, and I'm still omitting a host of other places I'd try before settling for the Bahamas. Way too many places, and that's just the Caribbean. Head across the Pacific and you open up another can of worms. I'm trying to plan a "dive safari" in Bali for next summer or maybe Lembeh if I can afford it, but then that would preclude another Bonaire or Cozumel trip.

Way too many places, way too little time and money. The traveling diver's perpetual dilemma. Given all that, maybe I can see why some people stick with the same spot. It sure makes it easier to decide where to go!
