(this is the second time I posted this. The "new" upgrade on ScubaBoard is a bit buggy to say the least!)
I dove with Bill at Vista Point yesterday. The vis was okay, about 15 feet, after you got away from the classes. The vis stayed decent down to about 35 feet (the first thermocline) then got pretty mookey for about 10 feet before it opened up again. Then it opened up to about 20 feet. We found a second thermocline at about 70 feet that dropped the temp to 58 VT3 degrees. Bill was sans hood and gloves and gave me the universal "I'm freezing my ass off!" signal so we headed back up to balmier waters.
I was trying out my new drysuit (check my avatar pic) on the first dive and I couldn't have been happier. My only disapointment was that I thought (hoped) that the rock boots would have had a thicker sole. As it was the sole is thicker than the booties on my old dry suit but not as thick as my Oceanic wet suit rock boots. I'll pass that along to DUI. I may end up getting Oceanic rock boots big enough to fit my drysuit.
The new suit is cut a bit bigger than my old suit (I can actually reach over my head now) and I was about 4 lbs overweighted so I had a bigger bubble inside the suit to manage than I was used to. Not to worry though. By the end of the dive I had the shoulder vent adjusted to keep me neutral as I ascended. If I had to vent while swimming horizontal, all I had to do was roll slightly to my right.
With my arthritic shoulders I still had to have help getting the zipper started when donning the suit as I don't have the range of motion to get it myself. So much for self donning. I'm thinking about fashioning a tool to help with that. I'll keep the board posted if I come up with something viable. Might be a market for it since there are a lot of old guy divers out there whose shoulders are in as bad a shape as mine.
All in all a good maiden dive with the new drysuit.
