(Sorry to sound like a Palace cheerleader, Don, but it really is that good)
 The cheerleading I get annoyed with is the number of divers touting their favorite Op as best even tho they don't know what the originator wants. In this case, we were furnished info that helps offer reasonable suggestions, but dang - so many of the Coz Ops are very good.

Hotel preferences are a different thing really, even tho it still helps to know what the originator wants - which we do here. I still think that the Palace is charging $1500 more to throw in $1500 in credits that can be challenging to use, but you state your case well.

Don I know there's some truth to that, but the reality is that the prices are not really that high at the Palace! Less than the Presidente - and you get food and booze, and tours. I know that in the end I'm paying for the food/booze/tours, but the fact that it's included just makes it that much more convenient...and less irritating when you don't gotta pull out the plastic for everything you wanna do. I know my Mom, and if I have to pay individually for her tours she'll try to talk me out of spending the money. If it's included, she'll use 'em, and she LOVES that kind of stuff. :D

Lee, your mom will love staying at the Cozumel Palace and the dining options are great. I have only heard good things about the resort. You guys are close walking distance to everything and she won't have any qualms about exploring on her own while you are out diving. If you do get the resort credit, don't go with the on site dive op. I have heard that the credit includes the diving so double check. Sorry to say, but if you are looking to avoid cattle boat, the on-site dive op is the poster child for that word! All the previously mentioned dive ops are super!!

Call Al at Bay Adventures. (They are the travel company for the Scuba Board Invasion.) Al is one of the owners. Tell him what you want.
Here is the page about the resort credit and the specials at Cozumel Palace.

He can help you arrange the diving. If he is married to the on-site dive op than look around and see if there are other dive ops that have arrangements with Cozumel Palace. If not, any dive op will give you a discount on multiple days of diving (dive package). Have a great time!!

From the Palace you can have a 5 min ride to close sites or 20-30 min if you go farther south. Unless there are storms or the winds really pick up due to a front or the like, the boat rides are generally easy. Many times the water is glass. Rougher water can exist at very far south sites (all on West side) such as Colombia deep, Punta Sur and Maracaibo but it depends on the weather. I don't think of Coz boat trips as really rough in general but the occasional storm can change that.
If I recall LU offers divers choice on sites so it's concensus on where to go (close, calmer, etc). Can't say about Aldora. I assume you are not planning East side diving - not many do that even when the West side is rough and the East calms down. I think Aldora does this.
The Presidente is slightly south of town and I would say about a 10 min drive to the center and maybe even just a few to the southern edg of town. I don't consider it walkable to town. I think it's already answered but the Cozumel Palace is in town (south of center). Fare to town should be about $5-6 for two people from the Presidente to town.
If you want to explore, want to find something and need info I would get a Can-DO Cozumel map as it has hotels, restaurants, attractions, taxi fares, downtown street map, East side of island notables (and worth the trip), etc. An excellent map for about $10. The format is like the old gas station maps. Much better than silly one page tourist map. Search internet on Can-do map. The website will show as cancunmap.com for some reason but navigate to Cozumel. I don't usually beat the drum for specific things but if you want a good map, get this one.

That's how I saw it. It's a lot to pay for a hotel room, but it's a very nice room, nicer than the Presidente IMO (though we stayed there over 10 years ago so my experience is dated). When you consider all the added perks, which otherwise quickly add up a la carte, it becomes a very good deal for the higher-end experience. It's not just three meals a day, but they always have guacamole and chips (and nacho cheese sauce, J's downfall) available to go along with your margarita. Not the watered-down drinks in plastic cups like other AIs, but fancy fruit margaritas and pina coladas and even flaming coffee drinks (my downfall) made with premium booze, all "on the house". Cozumel has grown pricier over the years and, while there are excellent bargain meals and drinks to be found, there are also plenty of overpriced tourist joints where bar and food tabs can be steep. I tend to live it up on vacation. For drinks and wine and three meals a day, we'd easily be spending in excess of $200 a day. When I subtract that from the room rate, that very nice room becomes an excellent deal. Throw in the snacks, 24-hour room service, the shows, and the $1,500 in credits, plus included wifi and phone calls to the US and Canada, and it's like getting the room for free.

OK, enough cheerleading from me if you're already sold on the place. I should get a commission! No, I do not have any financial ties to Cozumel Palace, nor am I even one of their members. Actually there is one negative about the Palace, frequently noted in TripAdvisor reports: at some point they will try to sell you a membership, usually drawing you in as part of a guest survey ruse, but it wasn't a hard sell at all and we were left alone after declining once. If you can survive the time share shills upon arrival at the Cozumel airport, you'll have no problem declining the Palace offer. It's a Mexican thing, I guess, as we've been subjected to the same or similar elsewhere in the country (I remember they were very persistent at the the Sheraton in Cabo for instance, it's nothing like that at the Palace).

But you're right about not having to carry cash or deal with plastic. It's nice not even worrying about signing for a bill. No wait at the end of the meal when you've finished your dessert and coffee, just walk out with a wave to your waiter. Even if you plan on dining out most nights, give the Palace restaurants a try for dinner at least once or twice as they are pretty darn good for "free" food, definitely as good or better than some of the overpriced touristy spots in town.

Well LeeAnne I don't think you or your mom will be disappointed in the Palace. It is beyond my budget, but it is a nice place for sure.
Most of the boat rides are pretty smooth. We can talk about shuttles/taxis/car rentals/ dive ops/restaurants/east side/dealing with money/and other stuff later.

I'm leaning towards LU - I like what I'm hearing and reading, and in particular that they've worked with disabled divers before (I HATE being dependent, but oh well...it is what it is, and I refuse to let it slow me down). I like the looks of their boat too. Here's a question: what is the usual duration of a boat ride to the best dive sites? Is it hard slog pounding over waves? Or an easy skim? I'm a little concerned about any spine-pounding slogs - I remember when we did the Blue Hole in Belize, 2 solid hours of pounding just about pulverized my kidneys, and that could be dangerous
Isn't the Palace closer to town?
Living Underwater has seat cushions for everyone so even on days when the ride is a bit rougher than others it is still pretty smooth. When I first started diving with Jeremy I was recovering from a herniated disc and really appreciated the cushions compared to boats without such amenities. Plus the Jewfish rides pretty smooth anyways. As someone else said boat rides can be from 5 minutes to 30 depending on the site. All sites are good diving so it matters little where you go. But if anyone on the boat is being picked up from one of the hotels far south then you will be diving in that vicinity. The Palace is right in town. Presidente is next to caleta where most ops leave from but all the steel tank ops will pick you up at the Palace so it isn't an issue. Cab fare from town to Presidente is about $10 each way. Before Jeremy began picking up in town I used to ride my bike to caleta and Jeremy would store it in his office. I got lots of exercise back then..

I'll chime in. My wife has some medical issues. We dive with Alison. Scuba Dive Cozumel | ScubaWithAlison :cheerleader: Her boat, the Maximus is a converted sport fisher with big outboards, so it is still FAST (I cant remember a boat passing US) with a comfortable ride on the padded bench. You can see it on the website. There is a smaller boat on the website, but that isnt with Alison any longer. Maximus has the swim platform deck at the outboards, so typically you plant yourself at the rear and Capitan Carlos brings you your gear and then you can giant stride in. On return, he will if you request take your weights and BCD and you can climb the ladder naked....or nearly..... Usually two stride and two roll at a clip. She runs the usually 80s and you can get 100AL air. Everyone dives their tank. We have had many solo divers going the club.

If you can arrange your stay through your airline travel service, you can probably get a non-ocean view room for well under $100/night at the Casa Mexicana. Hotel is modern, clean, and good staff. Wife and I have stayed there at least 8 times (lost count). Great breakfast buffet comes with the room. Problem is, no beach/no spa. For sunning and sitting, however, their 2nd floor patio looks out over the downtown harbor so there is plenty to see. Really good sunsets also. Tiny wading pool right behind the patio chairs--bar nearby.

What it gives you is access to downtown shops and restaurants. All the good stuff is within 6-8 blocks, and most of the restaurants you saw on the Board are right there. They do have an escalator from the street to the main lobby level and elevators inside to the room levels.

As for diving after a back operation--10 years ago I had a lower back laminectomy (no fusion) and went diving from the little open Carolina skiffs on Grand Turk two months later. If this is all you had, then you certainly can tolerate the 6-pack boats on Coz. You get the special attention on those you don't get on the cattle boats, so you can back roll in and take your BC off in the water before you get it if you need to. Just work on those tummy muscles.

Bobfmdc, thanks for the info. Casa Mexicana sounds great, although it doesn't fit my needs for this trip. Lack of a spa and other amenities is probably the biggest issue. Budget is not the primary concern in my accommodations choice on this trip - it's more about ensuring I pick a place where my 74-yr-old Mom will feel pampered, be happy and not bored while I'm off diving. I don't mind spending more as long as it's worth the spend. I'm pretty well sold on Cozumel Palace, as it sounds like the best fit for now. I will keep Casa Mexicana in mind for another trip there, perhaps with hubby when we are less interested in amenities and more in the diving.

I had a full spinal fusion at L5-S1, with rods and pins. I'm feeling pretty good about the boats in Coz - I think I'll do fine. Excellent advice about the abs - my physical therapist happens to be a diver, and we are zeroing in on my core, for sure!
