m5tsai,

June / July - very hot here for sure, mid 30's, and plenty of sunblock needed - typhoons, unpredictable but I think in summer 2010 I had to cancel only 2 weekend's dive plans because of the weather.

Normally that time of year I'll wear a 2mm shortie wetsuit, which to be honest is for protection from the occasional jellyfish and so on only, as you'll find the water will be prob 28 C or therabouts. Of course as anywhere, depending of which site you'll find sharp things and corals - so just make sure you get yourself a decent dive guide, especially with the young one with you.

Own gear, if you (or at least your daughter) are more comfortable with your own mask, regs & wetsuits - then I'd bring, but BCD/bootees/fins can be rented, but of course quality of them will depends with whom you dive.

Just come back from a weekend in Kenting, 4 boat dives, no current, no problem, will post a quick dive report and pics in this forum later.

Cheers

Finally got Taiwan flight booked.

And thanks, Makhno, LoveOceanicGears, and Wantonmien's reply. You all gave me some very good ideas to think about and sort through, really appreciate it.

I'll definitely check into sports equipment baggage restrictions stuff. I'll make sure to bring the masks, snorkels, and regs around. If we bring BCDs, probably will leave them there as a second set each time we go back since they are pretty old, prbably can use a new set in US. Will probably need to shop for some 3mm wet suits if we're going to bring them.

Wantonmien, I'll be looking forward to the dive report of Kenting. As to now, probably do a day diving in LongDong just because it's near and get familiar with the diving for my kid. Then when my husband comes later, probably goes to either Kenting or Green Island for couple of days.

LoveOceanicGears, Haven't been to Bonaire, it's on the list of to dos, just haven't got around to it, but it's getting close, once we get our daughter hook up on diving.:eyebrow:

Thanks everyone. Will try to report back once the trip is done.

m5tsai,

Advise no problem, and when in Taiwan if you drop me a PM and if I'm around at the time might even join you for the Longdong dives.

One more suggestion for you - if you want a wetsuit - copy this address in Taipei, and visit the shop early on your trip -

台北市中山區松江路63巷3之1號

They will measure you up, and hand make you a wetsuit any colour, thickness and style you want, very reasonable cost (a 2 mm shortie cost me about NT$2000) - and normally from measuring to finishing making, about 3 days.

Guess you read the posting and Kenting report - with the Pink fish !

Cheers

I got my wife interested in scuba while in Cozumel, but she really got hooked at Bonaire. On last day of vacation, after two tanks boat diving, she even says yes when I asked her to do another shore dive. And after two night dives, she wanted to do another one. Too bad we don't have enough time.

Wantonmien: I don't even know they make customized wetsuit in Taiwan. Otherwise I will definitely visit the place while in Taiwan. Wetsuits I got in US, especially 7mm one, just doesn't seem to fit right. Well, next time I know...

Wantonmien,

Is heading out to airport back to Taiwan this morning. Finally, and thought I checked in and just remembered the shop you gave me, but not the phone number. Do you have it? If so, I'll call first to set it up instead.

Also, after we got back, maybe 1 week later, that'll be the week of July 4 (Ha!), if you are interested in LongDong Dive, I and my daughter may join you first for it. And wait for my husband come to go south somewhere.

Thanks,
May

m5tsai,

The shop for a wetsuit 台北市中山區松江路63巷3之1號 02-25173606 / 02-25173605.

Looks like you made a bad choice on arrival date - right now a Typhoon is looming off the coast, it's raining in Taipei and web camera looking at Long dong bay shows, grey, rough undiveable weather - am still hoping Sunday improves but will wait and see. Next weekend, drop me a PM through here, and if weathers good, at weekend, no problem will get you in the water up North, or get hold of Ken at Pioneer anytime in the week, and he'd be glad to take you and the young one for a safe dive I'm sure.

Happy landings, and welcome to Taipei !

Cheers
