He was spear fishing off the coast...was brought to the park as the fastest way to get him to help so the incident didn't happen at BHB.
This is certainly not an unprovoked attack.

Totally agree. and if he had been using a tight buddy system, his buddy would most likely have seen the shark coming in, and been able to wave it off....
Too many spearfisherman are out doing their shooting hundereds of yards apart, and ignore the benefit of having eyes looking behind them :-)

Even 12 foot bulls don't want to be swatted or bumped with a speargun, and the real skill is just watching in all directions....the bulls attracted by spearfishing are "often" going to try to approach from behind, predators like to come in unseen by their prey. They do know where YOU are looking..sharks read body language, intent, and awareness. Solo spearfishing ( same ocean buddies) is a risky adventure.

Water temp: 79. Viz: crap. Really - anything past 10-15 ft was a blur.

Is 15ft really crappy viz for the bridge??? Thats what it was on monday and I thought it was great. In the sun you could see a little more but nothing real clear.

Here is the octopus video from yesterday's dive. Sorry I'm still a little "Blair Witch Project" shaky with the Flip. But watch closely around :06-:10. He flashes his colors like an internal laser show.

You are correct: 10-15 ft is about average for the bridge. But still crappy. ;)

Jet here is a link to a video I short a few months back..hope you enjoy. If you watch you can see the octopus lets the scorpion fish go and then catches a sharptailed eel. This was taken at the debris field under the fishing pier.YouTube - Blue Heron Bridge Octopus
