...It sounds as if something more weighty, perhaps clashing ideologies, is coming into play. So the OP carries a unique piece of equipment that he finds intriguing. What's with all the debate concerning its relative value to whole philosophies and schools of thought within the diving community?...

I have to admit that I'm rather stunned to see this type of terse interplay over something that is, after all, just a proposed modification.

Next, we'll all be arguing over what type of octo keeper should be used.

Now you are just spouting madness, Guba - everyone knows that an octo should be in a bungy/necklace about your neck. :) In fact, TO ME the best place for ME to keep MY octo is in a necklace about my neck.

And if he is, does that mean that he "won" and you "lost"? Conversely, if he is not, does that mean he is the "loser"?

There certainly seems to be more going on here than a simple suggestion and diver's opinions about that device. It sounds as if something more weighty, perhaps clashing ideologies, is coming into play. So the OP carries a unique piece of equipment that he finds intriguing. What's with all the debate concerning its relative value to whole philosophies and schools of thought within the diving community? The whole debate could have been avoided by the observance of two words..."to me". Such as, "TO ME, the the device is an solution to a problem that doesn't exist." This implies that while someone might think the item of benefit, others might not. At the same time, if "the other side" had attached those two words to a reply, then we would all have recognized ALL the statements concerning the item to be exactly what they are...OPINIONS...and as such can be heeded or ignored at one's discretion.

I have to admit that I'm rather stunned to see this type of terse interplay over something that is, after all, just a proposed modification. Next, we'll all be arguing over what type of octo keeper should be used.

Thank you. That about sums up 99% of the back and forth on the board nowadays, even though some of it is down right comical. :mooner: Although some have stated it as clever but insist that it is more complicated, adds to the complexity, is a gimmick for lack of skill, or not a solution to any problem. Not one has answered the true questions at hand that were proposed to their response, or can give a detailed explanation on why it is perceived as seemingly so much more of a complex idea. It was clearly stated on my end that "I" found it useful, and never insisted anyone adopt this method. "I" did invite others to view, critique, and "choose" for themselves if this may benefit them or not. What really is sad is that someone with "not so thick skin" may shy away from posting or interacting in the discussion out of fear of being persecuted. Or just totally turned off by all the relentless unsupported facts and bickering (not so much in this thread as others).

Good looking idea.

For me, I just cut a length or cord to 25' and coiled it up inside the SMB. I have no plans of deploying it any deeper anyway.

I liked your setup and said so in your DIY thread. I also gave my solution (I just have 25' of cord rolled up in my SMB).:D I see absolutely no need for anything more on my routine, recreational dives.

Good idea. I think I'll be making one of those. Just the thing for our FL drift dives. Need to track down one of those little spools and sweet talk my wife into doing a little sewing.

Thanks for sharing.

A hardcore, experienced diver would use a necklace made out of bungee cord that he keeps in his dive kit instead of buying those fancy dandy pre-made rubber necklace.

If it ain't cut out of rubber inner tire hoses or sewn by own hand, then it ain't real dive gear.:dork2:

Mine is made of a piece of bungee (knotted and melted at both ends) and is fastened to the octo with a plastic cable tie which had the long end trimmed off flush and melted. And best of all, it is ALL BLACK!

Maybe the OP can design an octo holder?

Something simple, requiring velcro, shackles, clips and the services of an industrial tailor or shipwright? :D
