I'm a Fish!
So what is up with diving Louisiana? does it suck that bad? every thing I have read so far tells me never travel their other than to get to the Gulf!
so does anyone have any good feedback for this state, or is it doomed for divers?

Our food is the best in the nation, and it is a State known for its partying. Other than that its hot, humid and the diving sucks or is nonexistent. If you are visiting the Grand Isle area it is a different story. I believe you could be in blue water in about 2 hours and dive the rigs.

Yep it is more cost effective to drive to gulf shores then dive out of La. There are plenty of places to get wet but you might have 3ft vis on a good day unless you are 20+miles offshore.

well thanks guys its pretty sad that such a good state has really no diving.

It has great diving just no dive shops running boats to get divers to it. Most local diving on the oil rigs is by private boat. Depending on time of year and Mississippi River flow decent water can be found 10 to 15 miles off Grand Isle.

I've even heard at times that people have found blue water as close as 5 miles offshore, granted, you can't expect it. Some of the best rig diving and spearfishing in the world can be done in LA.

Then, there are some nasty lakes and rivers you can dive, certainly no worse than many of the rivers and lakes landlocked in the rest of the US.

I remember how clear the water was when I used to work on the rigs(12 years ago). I also remember the long rough boat rides out. I would love to dive on them one day, just haven't built the urge to drive 2.5 hours and than take a 2 hour boat ride and a guarantee of flat seas.

If you find a gaurantee of flat sees anywhere in the northern gulf, be sure to let us know where! :D

Back when someone was actually running dive charters out of Grand Isle, mainly myself in the 1980's, I sometimes made that drive and boat ride 4 times a week.

You just have to find a buddy that has a boat and is willing to go out that far.
