But if you don't deliberately stick your nose in the trough you can avoid it. If a sticky is where you expect that nastiness to be then why bother going there? When it's everywhere you can't get away from it.
I think we've stretched that analogy past the breaking point.

Good question, and I have a decent answer I'm thinking.

Because, when that sticky is filled with 100 pages of name calling and cheerleading...the new diver will still come in here and ask...."Which dive op should I go with in Coz" and people will still answer that question. So...the sticky will be pretty much a name calling fest sitting on top of the forum as a greeting for all new to this site, while serving no purpose since new divers are still going to ask, and we are still going to answer.

All in my humble opinion of course.

Maybe we should title that sticky "Dive op rank and rate - ABANDON ALL HOPE, YE WHO ENTER HERE" :D

I agree 1000% - which is why I agreed with Gordon's abandonment of that idea. A sticky won't change anything as far as new SB members/new divers asking who to dive with and it will breed more of what everyone is trying to get away from to begin with. AND - a format in which to review a dive op shouldn't be dictated to the members of the forum.

geokr - When I agreed to update the sticky, I was referring to the local info and general FAQ's about Cozumel - not about the dive op thread. That sticky with the Coz info was posted in 2007 - so it's time (overdue) for me to update it - and I worked on it a little today and hope to have it finished tomorrow or Monday!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone!

So, do as you do at home - put all your garbage in one place.

I did change my mind somewhat...
Back to the original question: Let's stop "Best/favorite Op" threads, please. Next time I see someone post an answer to one of those, I think I'll ask these questions....
Of the original poster: "Would you prefer valet services at premium rates or no frills boat with cheap rates, and - what else is important to you?"

Of anyone who replies that So-and-so is best: "Have you dived with any other Ops there? How many...?
Nah, no need in trying to stop "Best/favorite Op" threads; just deal with them better.

And "Of anyone who replies that So-and-so is best:" changed my mind there, too. Doesn't matter how many s/he may have dived with, so instead I think ask what specifically was great...?

I still don't like the idea of more than simple listings for Dive Ops, but if we are going to list discriptions: Ask each Op to write their own description.

I think Ratings are totally out of the question and feel confident that SB Admin will agree.

The good news in all this discusssion is simply that there are a lot of high quality ops on Coz that each have a lot of fans and that's simply good for all divers, veterans and newbies. Key Largo is somewhat similar, lots of good ops, some big some small providing different services but generally all of good quality. Nice to know competition still works.

That's very true. It's really a question of what the customer wants in an Op, isn't it? I know why I prefer my Fav, but that's because of my preferences - not because they would rae any better or worse than any other Op on a general scale.

Some will say it's the DMs who make the differences, but you know - I never count on that. DMs leave, or just take time off.

So I'm back from Sea World and I see things haven't improved here.

I'm no longer advocating a dive op review however, Bill, Christi and Gordon, just so that my original intentions are/were clear, I never intended my purposed dive op review sticky to turn into a 1000-post, name-calling all out brawl. My intentions were that it be heavily modded with anything other than a review being delete like most stickies are. Also with the understanding that any unfounded and scathing review be deleted if it were deemed to financially cripple an operator.

I now realize that this may not be the best forum for something like that but for those that are so animately against it, what is so wrong with dive ops being publicly reviewed by their customers? Heck, for just about every other service or merchandise, you can find reviews for them all over the net!

Dive Ops are reviewed by customers here all the time. Sounds like maybe you'd like something like Trip Advisor...?
