Please sign this petition and pass it along to your dive buddies to sign. This bill in Palau stems from a pressure group of mainly Taiwanese owned commercial fishing boats and Taiwan and China based commercial shark finners.

Stop Shark Finning in Palau: Diving the famed Blue Corner won't be the same if Palau's politicians approve Senate Bill SB8-44 to permit commercial fishing for sharks and shark finning. A follow-up punch is SB8-50, which would encourage commercial fisheries in Palau's waters by granting them a five-year tax exemption. This would gut the 2004 legislation that banned shark fishing by foreign fisheries, one of the most ironclad laws in the Asia-Pacific area. I wish it really would help but the governments in Palau are not any different than most others around the world. The word GREED comes to mind. They don't care what their people want or what the right thing to do is they just want the money.

I think we should cut the balls off the pricks that fin the sharks... eye for an eye so to speak.

I guess it's time to start talking to the navy EOD guys here about planting a bomb on a vessel in the water. After all, if they can disarm them in the water, they should know a few things about planting them, right?

Is it greed or is it just that the commercial fishers represent jobs in a poor country? You have to offer these people another way to make a living. Maybe ecotourism?

I realize that Palau is a very poor country but this industry is not putting Palauians to work as they do not have the means to fin sharks. They merely allow other countries to fish for a fee. I was very impressed with the industrious nature of the locals on the island; they may not have much but they are not afraid to work hard to make a living.
