I called about taking it and since I'd have to drive out of state for the OW portion and buy 7mm garb, a bigger wing etc I'm gonna pass. :depressed:PADI should make it easier for divers that just want to further their education. IMO the pool should work fine.

You can still take the course .. you will not get a C Card, but you will still gain very much from it .. talk to whomever instructor your thinking of taking the class with

Huh? A Rescue Diver has been taught how to rescue divers in open water situations and has shown that he/she has obtained such skills in realistic exercises in open water situations.

If you want to limit yourself to rescuing people in pools, you should take a lifeguard course.

Sounds like your real beef is that don't live anywhere near open water diving. Is that true?

Why buy 7mm Garb your dive shop dont Rent? why buy a bigger wing? you use the same gear you have now. If you get your c-card in rescue are you now expectiing an accident all the time so you will be helping people therefore needing a bigger wing? Plan it on a weekend and get away from town and take the OW and enjoy a new place to dive.

It is the first course you will take where the people who dive with you will benefit from it more than you - you will be a much better, more skilled, buddy than now.

But also, yes, you will benefit greatly for all the reasons already mentioned.......

Count me as one who strongly believes the open water portion is critical - how else are you going to learn to bring an unresponsive diver up from 25', tow them 150 meters in surf, maintaining rescue breaths while removing two sets of gear, and then extricate over a rocky shoreline?

I would imagine it is somewhat difficult for someone who doesn't live in the tropics but only dives warm water to take a Rescue class. If you don't dive locally (and unfortunately, a lot of people don't) then doing OW dives becomes a vacation thing, when you don't want to take classes.

I would highly recommend Rescue. I am not very positive about most of my PADI training, but that class was excellent. It begins with practicing safety skills that will keep you OUT of a rescue situation, and then teaches techniques for dealing with a variety of problems, from panicked diver on the surface to unconscious diver at depth. But it isn't just what to do in the water -- it's also about how to organize a search effort, what information you should have on hand at any dive site regarding emergency services and how to activate them, and things like that.

Excellent class. I believe the prerequisite is 25 OW dives.

I am one of those people who do not dive at home - and I don't intend to. I recently returned from a great dive vacation but unfortunately did witness a serious incident while there; that's why I asked about the rescue class. I wanted to know exactly what the course entailed so that if possible I could do some of it here before my next vacation, and then complete the OW dives there. Sounds like this should be do-able, as posts have mentioned there is a theory portion and then pool skills. I don't want to waste vacation time in a classroom. I will talk to our local instructors next time I am in the shop. Thanks

this type of knowledge is never a waste of time. bottom line is that if you wish to be a responsible diver, you should take this course. Not only is it fun, but you learn a great deal, as well as it builds confidence. 100 times better than fundives if you ask me

Sorry Morgan, when I said I didn't want to waste vacation time sitting in a classroom, I didn't mean that I thought the class was a waste of time, just that I don't want to do it on vacation. If there is theory to cover, I would like to try to do it at home before I leave.:D

I fly a 17# wing. It works for me in a 3mil shorty or less. "Enjoy a new place to dive" Ha...it's a zero vis 42* lake. Thanks for the advice though. :)
