So, if you could get the same wetsuit you have now (or any other wetsuit), but with a velcro (or other) flap in the necessary area - would you be willing to open the flap so that you could pee WITHOUT peeing in your wetsuit (note: for some of you, this would probably mean you have "something" hanging out in view for any who care to look), or would you rather just pee in your wetsuit?

If you would prefer this flap - would you pay extra for it? And if so, how much?

This device already exists, it is called a pee valve and is a routine accessory for dry suits. I have no idea if one could be added to a wet suit, but it certainly seems feasible.

Remember that the purpose of a wet suit is to trap a layer of water next to your skin to avoid heat loss. The disadvantage of the flap you describe is that it would allow cold water under your suit at precisely the place where many divers would prefer their body be kept warm and comfy.

This does not mean I am poo-poohing(!) your idea. I am merely pointing out a factor you might want to consider when finalizing the design of your invention.

Why do you think they call it a 'wet' suit? Seriously, by my 25th dive or so, I gave up trying to hold it until I got out of the water. It was stressful to try to wait. Now, I just let it loose about half way through my dive. If I wait till just before exit, the smell can be obnoxious.

That would be great for warm water dives, I'd pay an extra $10-15 for a professionally glued and velcro-ed (sp) "pee optional" wetsuit. As to the dangling issue, it doesn't seem like a big deal unless the vis is good, and then everyone is looking at things more interesting than me.:mooner: If you're in a large group or with strangers/kids you can always still "take one for the team." :shocked2: It really wouldn't take much more than 5 min, some extra neoprene and velcro and a knife to manufacture yourself. You would end up (with gents) with an odd looking "codpiece" on the front of your wetsuit however. Could be a little tricky as this is right near the sewn/glued seam on some wetsuits. In cold water I think everyone needs a little central heating now and then.

I have seen a few men with this flap on their wetsuit, I believe it is more for out of the water peeing rather than in water.

I wouldn't really care for a 'flap' myself. I have no issue with peeing in my wetsuit if needed. I can see the convenience of having it there for on land to save taking off the wetsuit but for a female I don't think it would help much :)

Funny you mention this. I actually saw something today online about DiveRite uses a balanced p-valve that can be used in a wet suit as well (to help with the smell). Didnt check it out but I am sure a quick google search should yeild results.

You just need to learn the flush motion.

I could care less. I've been peeing on myself since I was a baby. Why change things now?

Does peeing in your wetsuit really make it smell though? My wetsuit has never smelt like pee. I wash it thoroughly after every dive also. I think any gear smells whether it has been peed on or not, if one does not wash it properly (though maybe just salt water, I have not dived in freshwater before). My friend lost a weight pocket and it was returned to me a few days later by someone who found it. It had not been washed and had been kept in a bag. The smell was HORRIFIC!

Yes, I know there is a solution for drysuits. However, my question was a). Specifically about wetsuits and b). Specifically involved a flap that would let you hang your doodle out the window, rather than a valve of any type.

Not an idea for an invention - just an idea for discussion.

That's great...but has nothing to do with the question asked. Try again (:
