All this sounds really good but why not let him in on the real reason- With the mask on the back of your head you can see the shark coming up to bite you and you can then stab your buddy so it goes after the blood. Gives you time to get out if the water. There, I've let the cat out of the bag!

I like to wear it on the back of my head because at a distance it freaks people out since they think I have my tanks and fins on backwards!

Having your mask on the back of your head is all about style, not substance. Surf can take a mask off your forehead, off the back of your head and yes, off your face. In surf, my mask is around my neck.

Putting your mask on your forehead is suppose to be the universal distress signal for a diver. SSI teached that...does PADI?

So I wear my mask backwards on the surface so someone does not think I need rescuing.

I wear it on the back of my head because it causes people to go to forums and ask ...Why do some divers wear the mask on the back of their head!

I have a Rx mask so I wear the damn thing until I sit my butt down down. Otherwise without it I might miss where to sit.

When helping to teach prefer to tell people to put it around their neck rather than on their head. This is strictly so there is no chance to lose it.

Wearing mask around neck is a bit awkward and washes out the defog. But let's not kid ourselves, we wear it backwards on our head because mask-on-forehead makes us look uncool.

If boat diving, the mask comes off when I sit down to get out of my gear. Until then, it's on my face. When shore diving, I push the mask up on my forehead, or turn it around and put it on the back of my head. The former if I'm just marching out of the water, and the latter if we're going to float around and debrief for a while.

But I don't dive where there's surf. People who dive in water that MOVES are strange :)

Same for me. Plus, the mask is comfortable enough for me to wear on a dive for an hour or two, so another couple of minutes before and after the dive isn't an issue.

Typically, the mask goes on my face when I take it out of the mask case. It comes off my face when I sit down to degear.

I don't see any good reason for it to ever be anywhere else but on my face.

On the way out (shore entry) I wear the mask on my head backwards. I wear my octo bungeed around my neck and wearing a mask there is too bulky. Carrying it gives chance to lose it, on the head backwards I am not to worried of it being knocked of by waves and so forth. Once my fins are on, quick spit and rinse on she goes and all set. Exiting the water, shallow enough to take off fins, means shallow enough to take off mask, place on back of head in this case mask first so I can clear my hood of water and hear as well. On a boat dive I wear it, last on and once on the deck of the boat after a dive again first off, clear ears and remove gear.

Everyone is different , that's what make us individules....
