I would not give up either type of dive....they both have wonderful things to offer! Night dives are awesome because you get to see all the nocturnal creatures that just aren't out in the daytime....however, you also have to fight with the surf entry/exit when it's dark and harder to see (assuming it's not a boat dive). I find it especially cool to dive the site when it's light out and see what it has to offer in the day....and then dive the same site when it's dark out and see what different things it has to offer. The differences are striking....it's one of those things that you won't appreciate as much if you don't see it both ways.

I like day dives, I like night dives with lights, and I like night dives by moonlight. Which is better?

There's something surreal about floating along underwater with no lights on, just watching what looks almost like an old grainy black-and-white film from the World War I era. I'm not sure I'd want every dive to be like that (it'd be like eating nothing but angel food cake), but it's the type of dive to change you for a while.

Sometimes the site I'm diving doesn't have much to look at during the day, I'll come back at night and it's lit up! There will be life everywhere and a lot to see. Just depends on where you are.

It depends on where youre diving and what you want to see. day dives are perfect for wrecks and night dives are great for wildlife. One of the best night dives i've done was in truk lagoon. The shipwrecks seem to transform at night. Everyhting looks eerie especially when you turn your lights off with just the moonlight illuminating the wrecks.

I actually like them both on day dive's to a reef you see half the coral and fish out doing their thing the other halve are sleeping then at night different coral's come alive along with the various eels and of course the reef sharks seem to prefer feeding at night so i get pleasure from both

Roatan It sounds like you found a great resort there. I know I am planning to go somewhere soon. Possibly Key Largo or Key west. Have you done both night and day dives there by chance? Or has any one for that matter?

Down here, sometimes the ocean has a phosphorus quality (supposedly from a micro-organism) When you run your hand through the water it leaves a green-glowing/sparkly trail behind for a brief moment. My first night dive was during a full moon, crystal clear water with this effect going on.
Even at 50 feet you could easily see the outline of the wreck light up as the current washed over it. We turned out our lights, stretched out our arms and it looked like that scene in Peter Pan when the kids are flying over London with magic dust streaming off behind them.
It was one of the best dives ever.

I prefer daytime, because I like to see a landscape. I don't need night, because I live in Switzerland where there are many lakes and from 130 feet, it's dark and I use a light.

About 20 years ago I did a night dive in the ocean. Really, it was more of a bounce dive. Unfortunately, I was afraid of the dark when I was a LOT younger and night dives are like in the dark.

One of these days I'll try it again. There is sooooooo much more to see at night.

Like them both but I'd never pass up a night dive if possible. My video comes out with better color with the lights I use and you see different wildlife than you do during the day.
