I'm going on a trip next month to a place that has diving (and yes I'm being somewhat vague). There is a new operation there that goes to places not normally visited.

I wrote to the new operation and asked about going out with them, told them I'm a moderately experienced diver but will be without a buddy.

Here is their response:

We do not emphasize the "buddy system" like most operations. We expect/promote divers being responsible for themselves and like to let everyone dive their air. Now since the Divemaster will likely be on an 80 (though it's possible they could be using a Rebreather) they probably finish ahead of you and depending on the dive site you may be able to continue for a time.

Now I'm NOT a solo diver nor am I a Kool-Aid drinker -- but I do believe in diving with a buddy.

Would you dive with this group?

(BTW, I will probably NOT dive with them until I bring my own buddy.)

They were probably just trying to assuage your concern about not having a buddy. You may be reading a bit much into it.

Deco -- you may be right, BUT, what do you make of their response? I make it out that, as far as they're concerned, I should plan on diving solo.

You are going wreck diving in New Jersey? :eyebrow: j/k everyone, settle down! :rofl3:

I think they interpreted your question to them as if you were asking permission to dive solo and they gave it to you...I think that´s all there is to it...

It sounds like they are leaving it up to you. Find a buddy, follow the DM, dive your air, whatever floats your boat.

I'm going to agree with those who say it looks like they thought you were asking to dive solo and they are giving you permission to do so.
Ber :lilbunny:

Sounds like my kind of operator.

Generally hard to find and you'd be doing everyone a favour by telling us who they are.
Both those of us that believe we're each responsible for our actions and those that would rather have a hand-holding environment so they can avoid them.
