In the first place, the projected reserves are on the order of a century (some think 3 centuries), not five years. In the second place,
not only does modern drilling pose nearly zero risk,
but the structures provide habitat for a wide variety of sea life. In the third place, the development of alternatives (1) has an uncertain "finish line" (2) requires a vibrant economy as a foundation and (3) needs a safe place to proceed; we need a robust, reliable, secure energy base to create the future's robust, reliable energy base.
In other words, we need to drill now so we can forego drilling in the future.
There won't be any "alternative development" in a dhimma.
Rick

Then why do they evacuate them when a hurricane is coming.

Captain, I see from your profile you like
Diving, boating, riding my Harley

So now you want to dig up my front yard :no so you can keep on guzzling gas, just an observation.

This floridian thinks that the people of florida should get to decide what happens off our shores, and I say drill. It will help tourism in florida, improve our economy, and aid the nation in reducing dependence on foreign energy. I also think we should build nuclear plants, wind farms, solar arrays, ethanol refineries, ride bicycles, walk more, take buses, whatever works.

:11:
I take it you don't let on to your dive buddies your complete disregard for humanity. What a shockingly amoral worldview.

In economics the more you have anything the cheaper it becomes. It also applies to humans. It may be amoral but that doesn't make it any less valid.

The rigs are evecuated to protect the workers just as the coastline is evacuated to protect the residents, Duh.

Well my front yard, Louisiana has been dug up as you but it to supply you with the energy to operate the boat you take to the dive site, power your car to the boat and power the compressor to fill your tank. It's time you pay your share.

As I read the comments there seems to be a lot of reasons on how to resolve this problem without drilling today. The wind is not a constant factor except in Washington D.C. One way to help the situation is to put a ton of windmills around DC and put more politicians there. That will temporarily solve some of the problems.

What got us into this mess is greed and special interest groups. This post is nothing more then a bunch of people that are speaking up for their own interests, what ever they are. Everybody buddy seems to have their own opinion about the energy problem. Which is normal for this board.

We all know about opinions, everyone has them. For every good one there is someone shooting it down. What is not apparent is a real solution to the problem, just blame.

As i said previously, alternatives over the past 40 years have come and gone with the politicians failing badly to the needs of the people. Growing corn is not the answer to this situation. Read the papers, listen to the news ( Not the political BS ). There is a major flood in the midwest, not to mention a very serious drought also. This means that corn will not grow without water or to much of it. So let us look at the current situation: We are running out of oil because we do not want to drill new wells. The corn crop this year will be minimal to say the least. So what are we going to do now???? Wait for alternative sources of energy?????? Does not sound to bright to me.

We are in a reactive mode because our politicians tell us what we really need.
We need to start doing something today to get us to TOMORROW. Drilling for oil is the immediate answer. Researching for alternative energy should be a way of life.

After the first oil embargo people started diving fuel efficient cars and research was in high gear. Gas prices went down. After a few years it was was back to the the same old thinking. The restrictions put on the car manufactures became a thing of the past. Yep, SUV's HUMMERS, Pickup trucks are the in thing.

So for now I'm going to sit back and read all the comments on who caused what and how everyone is going to defend their point of view. Hopefully ( but I doubt It ) there will be a solution to the problem we are faced with.

More offshore drilling does little at the pump: EIA | U.S. | Reuters

According to the reports I have seen it would take at least 5-10 years to see any effect on supply from off shore drilling. That won't make much difference in our current gas prices. Since it would take so long to see any results, why not work on an alternate fuel source to break our dependence on oil. No, ethanol is not the answer, but I have a hard time believing that a country that can put a man on moon within 9 years can't find a cheap, viable, environmentally friendly alternate fuel source.

Logically speaking, supply and demand alone wouldn't cause the oil prices we see now. IMHO, if we started drilling, oil prices would lower, for psychological reasons, rather than rational ones. I predict we will have an alternate to oil in the next ten years or so.

No Captain, People are not all that important, and we surely don't need any more people. I agree, we will likely breed ourselves into extinction, and then the planet will recover. We are the dinasaurs of the 21st century because we are using more than our share of everything. Resources are not shrinking, we have become gluttons.

What are you doing to reduce your share of resources?

modern drilling pose nearly zero risk. You said, "The rigs are evecuated to protect the workers". So is there a risk or not?

So this is a *** for tat

Nothing to do with sorting out our dependence on a dwindling oil supply.

It would seem some people do not learn by past mistakes.

Once again there is not one solution. We should be drilling not just in Florida but all over (if you don't want to see the rigs from shore fine put them further out), for every 500 new rigs we need 50 wind farms, 50 solar farms, 5 nuclear plants, and 2 refineries.

While captain is dead on with regard to population growth which we can not control (without plague, war, or a desimation program). We can contol our own consumption and efficency. So tuffer MPG standards, building requirements on new homes and buildings as well as tax credits to bring older homes and buildings up to the best tech available.

Heavy investmentment in new technology not just for new solutions but once again to improve exhisting solutions.

All of this cost money and lots of it, but not near as much money as we will have to spend if you choose to do only one or two of these ideas and 10 years from now we look up and through no fault of our own those ideas did not work out.

Now if only we had leadership that would take us in the right direction. So if your politician of choice believes that there is only one way other than using every option all at once then they are in fact playing to special intrest groups and have no intention of solving the problem.
