It was the two weekends with AG.

We had a workshop called DIR-f where we spent time on how to argue on the internet.

We had the bakers dozen of GI3 zingers which we could always use in a pinch.

"Take the cotton out of your ear and put it in your mouth" was always a good one.

It was a real eye opener. DIR-f took my internet arguing to new and exciting levels.
I was taught not to wear cotton underwater ...

I've also been told several times where I could put the cotton ... and it was in neither my ears nor my mouth ... :11:

FWIW - I've had a bunch of unsolicited advice from divers with respect to the way I choose to dive. Not all of it came from DIR folks either ... even when it purported to represent the DIR way of doing things.

I chose not to take most of it seriously ...

Which may explain your choice to team dive? :D

Yes. I live in a city with lots of DIR/team divers, and I'm likely to move to other large metropolitan areas with lots of DIR/team divers. The "stranded on a desert island with all the scuba gear in the world and a solar-driven compressor that never breaks down" hypothetical is unlikely to occur to me.

I have been watching all the DIR posting with interest for a few months. It's become obvious, to me at least, that there is a very vocal group of DIR posters that actually either have no formal training or have not done any post training dives with experienced DIR divers. I’ve met and dove with countless DIR divers and instructors and almost all were very friendly and not militant at all, despite the heated conversations that go on here.

The reality of DIR diving is much different than what had been portrayed. In reality very few DIR divers are as regimented or strict as what is often described here.

When I do tech or cave diving, I’m configured 95% DIR, as is most everyone else, and have never had complaints or had other DIR divers refuse to dive with me. I (we) are usually just thankful to have someone of similar mindset to dive with. (I once had a group of cave divers grill me about my experience before letting me dive with them, but they were not GUE.)

Just so you know, my deviations from strict DIR are that I wear my instruments on different wrists than what’s recommended simply for practical reasons. I have also began holding the primary light in my right hand because it makes more sense than having to constantly untangle it from the primary hose. (I don’t scooter.) Almost every DIR diver I’ve dove with has some minor modification from the strict version of DIR, it’s just accepted.

I do pickup dives frequently and in order to have the most diving options, I dive with the DIR crowd, and despite being DIR, I also dive with non-DIR divers as long as I don’t believe there is a safety issue. I feel that diving with a diverse group has helped improve my skills not weaken them.

Good post!

Step 1: Grab reg in mouth, dip head, push to OOA diver.
Step 2: OOA diver puts in mouth. You put your bungied backup in. Not necessarily in that order.
Step 3: Breathe...
Step 4: Disaster averted.

Skips that whole "where the heck is my octo?!" problem, and "oh I'm sorry I didn't know there was coral in my octo because it was banging into the reef!" problem, not to mention the "geez I don't even know if this thing works, but here you go anyway..." issue.

Not to mention the "guess which of your regulators the OOA diver is going to snatch" problem ;)
