You guys are quibbling and missing the point, even an aluminum plate is too heavy unless your diving tanks that are positive. Neutral diver/Neutral rig should be the goal if you are really interested in doing it right.

Not to be argumentative but I think that you are imposing what you believe to be right onto the DIR system. What you suggest has nada to do with "DIR" or the "DIR" definition of a balanced rig.

I prefer a looser type of diving. I live 5 minutes from a good ocean dive site. If I get off work early and the ocean is flat I, go diving. I'm not going to stay out of the water because I don't have a buddy.

I don't like the math, how many DIR divers do you need in the water if one is a spearfisher, how many divers do you need in the water if you have two spearfishers.

I like my snorkel on my mask for those long beach swims in a chop, if I put it in my belt while I'm submerged, I'll lose it.

I dive a steel tank in a T shirt.

I have no inclination to go deep or in caves.

I've been diving for 35 years and haven't had a use for it.

That being said, look at the WKPP project and their incredible accomplishments. How many divers died doing those extreme dives. They must be doing something right. It wasn't Moses passing down the DIR commandments. It was a bunch of people screwing up, oops-that didn't work, almost killed me, won't do that again-and learning from it.

I'm not "imposing" anything on anyone, I'm simply pointing out an oversight in the DIR approach that creates a documentably deadly situation under the guise of that benign title "ballanced rig." I never said that the concept of a neutral dive/neutral rig had anything to do with the DIR "balanced rig," though I think that the world would be a better place if it did.

This is just one of several examples that come quickly to mind in which the cave-blinded progenitors of DIR (who, BTW, did a great job in the caves) sucked up their hubris and cast it out upon the open waters of the world.

OK, that's a little extreme, but you gotta admit it's a nice turn of phrase.:D

That's a pretty thoughtful, lucid and all ways round useful response. Really makes your case.:rofl3:

I enjoyed reading thi thread! I don't have many dives but I do want to learn as much as I can.
I did not know what DIR or GUE realy was but have some idea. I am land locked here in OK
and may never go tech, but I would rather be tought so if I ever find myself in anotherrealm
by accident I would have a better chance of getting back alive. SB is a good place to veiw
others opinions and learn quite abit! I know reading dose not take the place of proper training
and never will!!! but gives me some understanding!
THANK'S

Take most of what you read on SB with a grain of salt.....you are much better off reading reputable texts and agency training manuals than putting much faith in internet jabber,,,,many of us try to be honest and accurate in info. exchange....but there are a ton of 'toilet bowl divers' lurking with all sorts of advise--:shakehead:. You get what you pay for.

I know! I do read manuals, and training texts. And Diving with proper instruction and training is Doing It Rite, Diving without proper instruction and training is Doing It Wrong!!!
