And....

Here we are, four years on from the original post and JJ is still building an amazing machine.
I'm in Donegal Ireland diving the Malin Head wrecks. 8 CCR divers. 7 JJ's. 1 Meg. Last November I was in Greece. 6 JJ's. 1 Meg.

Where were you diving in Greece? Kea?

Mainland. Near Kea but not Kea. Pretty much blown out for all 8 days but managed to get in 4 dives that were somewhat sheltered. The guys on Kea were blown out every day.

Hi all,

First time poster here, long time reader of the forums!

I had decided to bite the bullet and buy myself a new JJ CCR for my first rebreather. I had spend a lot of time investigating different units, but ended up with the JJ.

Reason I'm posting is to ask you a question about recent experience with JJ.
After my payment, delivery was set for two weeks. Two weeks became four weeks. Now I don't even have any date when it might be ready and I still don't have the unit. I had planned Mod 1 course dates and taken time off, which all had to be cancelled because there was no unit.

JJ is citing issues with their supplier of 1st stages. Communication with Jan at JJ has not really been pleasant, and I have to keep asking for any updates.

What are your experiences with JJ? Is this a normal situation with them, or is something more going on? I'm starting to get second thoughts about buying this unit.

No experience with the JJ here, but: First stage availability issues makes sense to me, considering that Apeks/Aqualung have just been sold to a new owner, and during the sales negotiations all production was supposedly stopped for accurate accounting. Apeks parts kits have become harder to get as well.

And the JJ being CE certified, the manufacturer is only allowed to sell it with the Apeks US4 1st stages, if I understand the JJ setup correctly (I think the DS4 intermediate pressure overbalancing with depth interferes with their non-balanced BOV).

They don't sell a "stripped" version (just the loop, can and controller) like ISC does with the Meg/Tiburon? Then you could put your own 1st stages on it. Perhaps CE rules don't allow it...

That’s a real shame, but not your problem.

If you can’t wait, and I’m not sure why you should, ask for a refund and buy an X or Fathom, depending on whether you’d be happy with slightly more complex and electronic or simpler and mechanical.

Three great and similar (ish) units.

My instructor says indeed the CE certification doesn't allow them to sell anything but complete systems, including those 1st stages.

Two weeks is surprisingly short … I think I have been told to order the unit about 6 weeks ahead of the course to have a guaranteed delivery date.

You could always use a rental unit for mod 1 and in general I would let your instructor to sort it out.

I have good experience with JJ, they go above and beyond to replace anything. Keep in mind that they order parts in batches, if Apeks don’t have enough in stock they need to wait and can’t use random first stages due to CE.
