Is there a club of micromeshists steering away from the purchase of wet and dry 500 times cheaper

Thanks....I guessed that was the case, but was not sure.

Interesting that 1st stages oriented towards tech divers typically have the flat-topped conical seat head poppet, where as recreation oriented 1st stages seem to trend towards the "T" style poppet....why is that?

When you say T style poppet do you mean the flat captured style of the Conshelf?
Personally, I don't think tech divers really thought about the difference between conical and flat. They chose Apeks because they were a sealed diapragm that was easy to work on, they could get parts, and cost at the time was reasonable enough that they could get multiple sets.
The Taiwanese companies had requests to copy what was popular for that application so that's why there are so many knock-offs of that style.
It just so happens they are the cone style seats. I don't think the market actively chose that style.

Yes, I was refering to the style similar to that used in the Conshelf. With regards to the cone style poppet, I didn't think the market chose that style. Perhaps I worded it poorly. I was just recognizing that there are some brands that have the cone style poppet, and those brands seem to be popular among divers that lean towards tech diving. I was just wondering if there is a correlation.

In this area Micromesh is available with a flexible cloth backing that molds to parts smoothly, and comes in grit up to 10,000.

Wet-Or-Dry around here is stiff paper backed and only gets to 600 grit. Tough to match the polish of Micromesh for a crisp valve seal with 600.

Some Chinese paper grits are were very inexpensive and available in up to 8,000 grit. Works okay for flat surface restoration like a second stage orifice.

But yes - Micromesh is ridiculously expensive. The only good part is using it in only 1 x 2cm bits. A little lasts a long time.

ANYTHING made by 3M is ridiculously expensive.
Look into Sunmight. It's a South Korean company that 3M helped set up, but then Sunmight took the reins and far exceeded all expectations of quality.
I use the automotive stuff. In 3M there's red DA paper that's supposed to be the economy line, and gold which is their more premium line, and then they have $purple$ which needs to be kept in a vault.
3M's red is worthless, it's dull from the get go and is shot in about 30 seconds. 3M's gold is better.
Sunmight's gold is sharper and better than 3M's gold but costs the same as 3M's red.
If Sunmight's micro mesh is anything like their other papers then it will put 3M to shame.
I'm also using a 600 wet or dry that's from Germany and blows 3M away plus it's cheaper.

3M is a bloated has-been company that is surviving off it's long gone once upon a time reputation as being the go-to leader and the best.
There's way better stuff out there at better prices.

Thanks Boss, thanks Mr Eric

Tell you what I have an obscene collection of these papers, the discs are quite soft

I do understand the advantages of micromesh and only question unnecessary use

That 3M it is for sale always everywhere, where was it made, who printed the label for whom

Yeah I got a heap of polishing gear for a grinder when I polished my, Erics magnificent plate

Remember these things Mr Eric

Ha I'm about to conduct my current ultimate test to buy a couple of laptops from AliExpress

I too ordered sandisks from ali and they all have soft fabric backs, they go all the way to 10k - so how are they different than micromesh?
Just the cost.

Probably.
However some cutting crystals are harder/sharper/higher quality than others and some adhesives they use to fasten the grit particle onto the substrate whether it's paper or foam are better than others so longevity comes into play.
However, if the product is half the price but lasts 2/3 the time of the expensive one then it's worth it.
Unless the expensive one is using some sort of very expensive abrasive material like diamond dust that only that material can yield certain results, whereas the cheaper ones can't achieve the same results because of an inferior abrasive material. Then oh well, you're stuck buying the expensive one. They got you by the juevos.

While we're on the subject of abrasives, here's a fun bit of technological genius.
With rubbing compounds, historically they used micro ground quartz in different particle sizes. Under s microscope they looked like sharp shards of crystal. When made into a cream compound and used with a buffing wheel on a polisher to polish paint or steel or anything, the particles would roll around cutting off bits of paint and leveling it removing scratches etc. The particles would also bang into each other and as they rolled around all the sharp edges would get dull and before long you had more like ball bearings rolling around not doing much. At that point you needed to add more fresh compound and keep going.
Now they have developed a compound that uses a synthetic ash of sorts that's extremely fine and extremely sharp. It starts out as say 800 grit and as it rolls around and breaks down it continues to shatter with new razor sharp edges but each particle is now 1500 grit, then as it continues to break down and shatter it becomes 2000 grit then 5000 grit, all the way up to 12,000 grit and maybe beyond. Every time it shatters it's as sharp as it was when it started with new razor sharp edges.
Remarkable stuff.
They have even incorporated this technology into their purple line dry sandpaper $$$$, so yeah 3M does have the tech for sure but at a pretty steep cost.
A bottle of compound is over $80, ouch!
But the mirror finish!❤️❤️❤️
