Is there a club of micromeshists steering away from the purchase of wet and dry 500 times cheaper

Thanks....I guessed that was the case, but was not sure.

Interesting that 1st stages oriented towards tech divers typically have the flat-topped conical seat head poppet, where as recreation oriented 1st stages seem to trend towards the "T" style poppet....why is that?

When you say T style poppet do you mean the flat captured style of the Conshelf?
Personally, I don't think tech divers really thought about the difference between conical and flat. They chose Apeks because they were a sealed diapragm that was easy to work on, they could get parts, and cost at the time was reasonable enough that they could get multiple sets.
The Taiwanese companies had requests to copy what was popular for that application so that's why there are so many knock-offs of that style.
It just so happens they are the cone style seats. I don't think the market actively chose that style.

Yes, I was refering to the style similar to that used in the Conshelf. With regards to the cone style poppet, I didn't think the market chose that style. Perhaps I worded it poorly. I was just recognizing that there are some brands that have the cone style poppet, and those brands seem to be popular among divers that lean towards tech diving. I was just wondering if there is a correlation.

In this area Micromesh is available with a flexible cloth backing that molds to parts smoothly, and comes in grit up to 10,000.

Wet-Or-Dry around here is stiff paper backed and only gets to 600 grit. Tough to match the polish of Micromesh for a crisp valve seal with 600.

Some Chinese paper grits are were very inexpensive and available in up to 8,000 grit. Works okay for flat surface restoration like a second stage orifice.

But yes - Micromesh is ridiculously expensive. The only good part is using it in only 1 x 2cm bits. A little lasts a long time.

ANYTHING made by 3M is ridiculously expensive.
Look into Sunmight. It's a South Korean company that 3M helped set up, but then Sunmight took the reins and far exceeded all expectations of quality.
I use the automotive stuff. In 3M there's red DA paper that's supposed to be the economy line, and gold which is their more premium line, and then they have $purple$ which needs to be kept in a vault.
3M's red is worthless, it's dull from the get go and is shot in about 30 seconds. 3M's gold is better.
Sunmight's gold is sharper and better than 3M's gold but costs the same as 3M's red.
If Sunmight's micro mesh is anything like their other papers then it will put 3M to shame.
I'm also using a 600 wet or dry that's from Germany and blows 3M away plus it's cheaper.

3M is a bloated has-been company that is surviving off it's long gone once upon a time reputation as being the go-to leader and the best.
There's way better stuff out there at better prices.
