Because it is redundant.

To some, that is a benefit and the exact point to carrying it. To have a redundant pressure measurement along with AI.

To others, that is a negative and the exact reason for dropping it. It is redundant and unnecessary. Since we don't carry two pressure measuring devices without AI, why do we need one with AI?

It is a personal decision and not a right or wrong sort of thing. For me, I have dropped the SPG and rely solely on AI. Others have made a different decision. It is all good either way.

i agree, it is redundant DURING a dive, but not before. For example, on a liveaboard, where someone fills your tank in place, an SPG allows them to quickly check if the tank has been used/filled without asking you to fire up your computer. I've had many DMs point to my mini-SPG on my first stage and thank me heartily.
 
My setup, AI computer on right wrist, transmitter on 4" myflex hose on first stage port, 2nd first stage port has myflex hose connected to an AI computer, clipped to left waist D-ring. Two computers, two pressure gauges. The odd problem I had with a transmitter mounted on a short hose, jumped off a dock near a thin rope tied to the dock nearby, somehow the rope got snagged and wrapped on the transmitter/hose assembly. I could not figure out how to untangle so had to remove all equipment to solve the issue.

I have some lighter tanks like Al40, 3L, Al13 which are handled just by themselves, on which the transmitter is mounted directly on the first stages, thinking there won't be as much strain on the transmitter if someone lifts there. The transmitter is somewhat of a lever so I fear it will break at the threads if heavy rig like Al80/Steel 100, BCD full of water plus weights is lifted by the transmitter.
 
I broke my Teric antenna in the middle of a week long liveaboard trip. I just continued diving without the AI and used the SPG. I didn’t lose any dives.
I had something similar happen with my Perdix AI when it had a circuit board issue. A second AI computer meant that I never lost ability to monitor my gas even without an SPG.

Another related potential issue is a dead transmitter due to flooding or a dead battery. An SPG or spare transmitter on the boat protects the trip from a transmitter failure. I have both and prefer that to diving with an SPG on every dive. In this instance, worst case is I have to finish one dive without any gas monitoring. That would be an inconvenience but not a high-risk event. I know my gas consumption well and where I should be roughly at any point in terms of gas remaining. The AI is just confirmation of what I already know to within a 100 psi or so.

Just sharing another way to handle these eventualities. YMMV.
