Vessel Firebird LOB in Egypt sinks

Apparently, Firebird is quite an old boat, it‘s from 2003 or so, with a general overhaul in 2019. I‘m currently on a LOB in Egypt and the manager here said he thinks Firebird and its sister Thunderbird should have been taken out of service because they are so old. (Won‘t post this manager‘s name or the boat I‘m on, don‘t want to get him into any trouble if the company running these boats sees my post.)

This does tend to get back to a number of posts about the regulatory regime for the country of registration and the port state hat the vessel is operating from. Twenty two years is not that old for a well designed, constructed and maintained vessel.

By way of comparison Spoilsport operated by Mike Ball out of Cairns was commissioned in 1989. On our last trip about 3 yrs ago that included some unpleasant weather I felt safe all the time

Quite old. Pfft. The manager is full of brine and feeding you herring entrals. To a certain degree age has little to do with such boats, it is all about initial construction, maintenance, modernization.

The Triton was a brand new boat and sunk on its main voyage. I would be more worried about the current boats.

2003 is an old boat? That is 13 years newer than my newest boat and 44 years newer than my oldest.

I think it’s just a new marketing ploy for Egyptian LOBs with relatively newly built hulls … “New boats don’t sink but old boats do … “

If you maintain something that should not be a reason.

If course others, especiall, in the same business, will state such things. Would not take it too serious from this source.

I was on one of the Blackbeard's boats in 1997 or 98. We had a hell of a storm crossing the Gulf Stream. Didn't sink... cause they are actually professionally built and stability tested. Also didn't catch fire.

The USCG licensing and inspection program may not be perfect and occasionally there are deficiencies and problems. But the Blackbeard's boats were built in 1976 and still operating today 49 years later - which is a far cry better than anything in the Red Sea where they sink or catch fire every other month or so.

Yes that was ONCE in a decade+. How many LOB incidents has Egypt had so far in 2025 alone?

The question is, how many people died in each incident and on the Conception?? Probably the number of deaths on the Conception is many more than on all incidents in Egypt.
