I’ll give you two pieces of data that I participated in…

8 years ago I was a captain for a charter of FWC peeps out of Daytona (Maybe 10 years ago now) where they took 3 of the best commercial fisherman in the state to harvest Red Snapper. In 3 hours, over 100 legal sized red snapper were caught and released. The goal was to get real numbers on what was out there. The report I read stated, “it’s possible the three fisherman were catching the same few fish over and over”. Lol.

20+ years ago, probably closer to 30. I was in a plane counting manatee for the state’s annual numbers. We saw 10’s of thousands. The report showed a fraction of that.

Bureaucracy never dies. Probably because of the way these issues are falsely cultivated.

There’s no doubt to me that Jew Fish are out of control. And they eat EVERYTHING. What’s suffering by JF losing it’s only predator?
Gee, wonder how they weren't "out of control" before us humans came along?

As an FYI, they do not eat "everything." The bulk of their diet is crustaceans and other slow-moving things (they seem to eat a lot of burrfish; snapper/grouper make up ~3%of the stomach contents). Go on a site with goliaths and there's not a dearth of other species. They will take something that's speared or hooked in front of them, but then again so will just about anything else in the ocean.

Biodiversity is the best sign of a healthy ecosystem. Because of humans and the fact seafood is a superfood, we need to manage it. They're doing a terrible job and divers are no help.

If I dive a wreck I want to see 100s of species of fish, coral, and crustaceans. What sells dive trips is 50 Goliath Groupers and Baracuda packed on a dive spot.

This is completely wrong. The fish does not go to FWC to do research. There are samples taken on the fish that are submitted FWC for genetics research and other reasons. But the fish is actually eaten by the fishermen.

My earlier point was that juvenilte goliaths do not have to be killed to get the same data. The small size chosen was because larger fish have high levels of mercury which are toxic to human beings.

Facts matter and you are not finding them from this source. Casting aspersions against Marine Lab scientists is so wrong. Trying to deny the results that you do not like is not the correct way to apply the scientific method.
Finding them from what source? The NOAA. Yes they keep correcting themselves. So what if the anglers eats some of the meat? My point is 100% fact. You just repeatedly what I said that they are using the fish for research. That's part of the deal if you want to participate in this silly program. You too sound like a NOAA marine scientist.

A Goliath Grouper Harvest Permit is a type of limited entry permit required to participate in the Goliath Grouper Harvest Program.
Each successful applicant will receive a goliath grouper harvest permit with a designated harvest area, and a physical tag, authorizing the harvest of one goliath grouper. The goliath grouper harvest period opens on March 1 through May 31.
Applicants who are awarded a Goliath Grouper Harvest Permit will be charged automatically. The permit, tag, and additional information will be mailed to the successful applicant no later than one month prior to the start of the harvest period.
The following information provides further details on specific information regarding these permits.
Application Dates: October 1-15
The application period will begin at 10 a.m. eastern on the first day of the application period and run through midnight on the last day.

To apply for a replacement goliath grouper tag, an applicant must submit a signed and notarized affidavit attesting that the applicant’s goliath grouper tag was lost or damaged. Such affidavit must include the applicant’s full name, Go Outdoors Florida customer ID (CID), mailing address, an explanation of the circumstances that led to the applicant’s goliath grouper tag becoming lost or damaged, and a statement certifying that the applicant has not harvested a goliath grouper during the applicable harvest period. Affidavits for replacement goliath grouper tags must be submitted to:
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
Division of Marine Fisheries Management

His point is that the "research" is data that is mostly already gathered through nonlethal means, and has been gathered for years. The only extra bit they're really getting is otoliths, which aren't that useful when the fish are all in the same size/age class.

"Research" is a flimsy justification for the tag program; FWC was hoping by authorizing a limited take (one that only targets juveniles, avoids core recreational diving areas, and stays in state waters to avoid NMFS review) they'd get the whining fishermen to stop bothering them.

They don't need the whole fillet to gather biological data. Why throw away the meat? Your perspective is from a position of no take no matter what. The opposing position is for limited take.

Anyway, you guys should apply. Pay your fair share we've been shelling out for decades. You'll finally be buying a saltwater fishing license and providing a non-refundable application fee for the lottery drawing. If you win, great, more money for FWC to promote and enforce Saltwater Fishing and conservation. 👍🏼

I hope this is the last of the specious arguments from CuzzA It's not worth the energy to rebut the silly things he says because they are primarily wrong and come from an attitude of anti-science, anti-regulation, anti-conservation and anti-environment. Verbosity does not make him correct.

Hey Tony, from your link you posted on your SpearBoard website and again here.

The goliath grouper, a colossus of a fish that can weigh up to 360 kilograms (nearly 800 pounds), is the delight of divers in Florida, though scientists warn their numbers are down since the US state allowed fishing of the giants to resume.

This is a flat out lie. Florida has not resumed fishing of Goliath Grouper causing a supposed decline in Goliath Grouper populations.

Please stop posting misinformation and claiming there's no bias and that it's "science."

During the first 2023 season only 26 slot fish (24-36") were harvested out of the 200 allowable lottery permits across the entire state except for South Florida where it is not allowed. That publication should be ashamed of themselves for spreading lies and people really should verify what they share on the internet.... unless you're doing it intentionally. If the later, carry on and hopefully people like myself will keep correcting you.

Spearing is selectively targeting legal, correctly sized and in season species.
I agree. Just don't anyone expect us to practice catch and release! :D :D :D

But preserving all jewfish is emotional to me. That's OK. I'm going to try and buy a tag.

It is hilarious that one of the arguments denigrating NOAA is that they inflated their numbers...but if you actually read their report they are reporting that the fishermen responding to the surveys are the ones inflating the numbers....kind of a "my fish is bigger than your fish" attitude, I guess.

I cannot find in the FWC documents that the prospective harvest is limited to juveniles; where is that? And how do you do that with hook and line? Keep catching until you get a small one?
