Shark Week does play on the fear factor in humans. Some of the shows had true educational value, but the "event" of shark week is about ratings. There are certainly real risks involved with
recreational activities on (or in) the ocean but there are steps you can take to mitigate the danger. There is an interesting website called the "shark research project" which is run by scientitsts and does have a section where citizens report on shark sightings.

If you scroll down on the "pacific coast shark news" you can see on August 2 there was a "blue shark" sighting in Pt. Lobos Reserve

There was an eyewitness of a white shark sighting off the Russian River on Sunday from a recreational fisherman, but these types of sightings are hard to verify as truth. False sightings are common up here.
