Personally, I only use a padded bag when I travel abroad on airplanes. Locally, I put all my gear in a plastic bin to head to the dive site. Makes cleaning the sand & debris easier than a fabric bag. For storage, I use stackable plastic bins. They're wide enough to allow a gentle arc in the regulator hoses.

Caution - if not fully dry, you will grow mold inside these with the weatherseal lid...

I used to use one of those insulated thermal lunch boxes. perfect size, perfect price. now I honestly just put my reg set in my personal item bag with other stuff for travel. For the boat I use the taco method and wrap it up in my bcd.

Regs get unceremoniously tossed in the gear tote with all the other gear.
