When do you use a regulator storage bag and what do you use and why?

When my reg is not hanging up drying, I have been using a mesh draw-string bag for storage and transport of the reg in a compact form.

I’m rethinking this and wonder if I should do something different for improved physical and/or cleanliness protection.

I did find this thread: Idea for superior regulator bag for cheap

I have two of the DGX large reg bags. One is for my sidemount set, plus I stuff both my Perdix and heated vest controller in there. The other reg bag holds my spare first/second stages and spare hoses. That one lives in my car (I only drive to dive). Sometimes on the way home from diving, my regs, lights, etc., are all dumped into a big blue IKEA shopping bag for the drive home, and I sort everything out when I get home. The regs are often sandy from my tanks being left in the water between dives.

I have a some old Sherwood padded carry bags that I store my deco, doubles and sidemount sets in. For single cylinder, it’s stored in a mesh bag that sits on top of the others.
Depending on destination, they either travel in said bags or I’ll use my Apex bag my sidemount set came with or wrap them in a towel.

From my experience, the main things to keep in mind are:
  • Retain - Keeping the hoses from going everywhere.
  • Protection from elements (dust, rain)
  • Padding - Minor drops, items places on them, shifting around in the car, etc.
  • Space - How much extra space the container takes.
  • Bonus Utility - Can it do anything else?
I have used:
  • Mesh Bag - Pros: Compact, lightweight, out of the way. Cons: Easy to lose, little protection from elements, no padding. Ideally, if placed in a mesh bag, put inside another container for protection.
  • Commercial Regulator Bag - Pros: Pretty good at almost everything on the list. Cons: Perhaps cost & lack of bonus utility.
  • Backpack (laptop backpack or "tactical" style backpack) - Pros: Good at most things on the list & can contain multiple regulators, accessories (computers, mask) or a save-a-dive kit. Cons: Takes up more space. Not as streamlined as the regulator-bag or a simple mesh-bag.
  • On tanks - When doing sidemount, I'll sometimes have my regulators already on my tanks, with hoses stowed. It's important your tanks can't roll around and damage the regulators. It's continent for just clip-on-and-go.
I currently use a "tactical" backpack, because it has lots of pockets, and contains my save-a-dive kit.

When my reg is not hanging up drying, I have been using a mesh draw-string bag for storage and transport of the reg in a compact form.

I typically only use "dedicated" regulator bags for travel or shipping ahead; and use open boat bags, such as those from L. L. Bean, for day-to-day use . . .

For storage: Discarded cartoon box.
Transport: On top of the wing and cover with clothing in an un-padded bag(checked bag).

Can you provide a link to the DGX large reg bags? I can't find them on their site??
