Ken-

As I've said elsewhere on SB, you are only old when regrets replace your dreams. Keep dreaming! I do. For example- the beautiful young 35-40 year old dive buddy, that around the world dive trip (return to SE Asia, off to the Red Sea, up into the Med with a possible swing down to the Galapagos), creating my own state-wide underwater TV show for cable, winning the lottery to pay for all of the preceeding.

Here's the thing: I don't 'feel old' (whatever that is.) Earthbound midlife I'm smack in the middle of right now (remember the hair and my recent return to rock stardom?) I figure now that I've cut my hair I can get the red sports car, wear a jogging suit, sport a gawdy gold medallion, get a nugget pinky ring, don a pair of graduated tinted sunglasses and blowdry my chest hair to get the full midlife effect.

Invisible to chicks - please. Had that problem my whole life... and now I consider THAT a blessing!

I guess a better way to put it is just that I have an intense distaste for the aging process. I live with an attitude of gratitude every day. I am so blessed. I'm stronger, smarter and have a bit more fun these days that I did when I was "younger." But I'm also more aware now of the water that rushes under the bridge. And that really saddens me often.

Maybe I shouldn't look down.

you stop learning...
you stop caring...
you stop trusting...
you lose your courage...
and your hope...
and your dreams...
and your belief that human beings are, at their core, miraculous

Happy Birthday...it's a great thing to have another birthday..especially when you consider the alternative!

The first time I felt old was when a 20-something called me ma'am!

here's the words to an old song: "I wake up each morning, and dust off my wits, open the paper and read the obits. If I'm not there I know I'm not dead - so I eat a good breakfast and go back to bed!"

I'll be 60 in '04. I'm looking forward to it. When I retire I will be able to go on 2-3 week dive trips in the sunny south.

Now I have to plan and plan just to get a week off. Then I feel guilty about leaving.
