Yeah but you turn down invites when the water is over 65*. :eyebrow:
I draw the line when surface temp is around 50*

I most certainly do not. . . unless I also have a cold-water invite for the same date! :)

Thermocline...agh! I found out exactly what a thermocline was on my first cold water dive. I thought the 6mm farmer jane with a long sleeved shorty would be way too hot considering it was 90 degrees outside. The surface temp was cool and we were warned we would need a hood and gloves below the thermocline.

I hit the thermocline and realized what it must feel like for the winning coach of the superbowl when the team pours the bucket of ice cold Gatorade over his head.

Next time I will heed those warnings. Now back to your regularly scheduled warm water talk...

ahhhh that's better....

Now I love the warm water but having a little more insulation I can take it a bit cooler than most with my 3mm shorty. Generally 20C - 22C! above that and I am ok. I just hate all that extra rubber. It's ok in the bedroom :-)

Last January I was diving the Speigel Grove and asked my CD Buddy there about the bottom temp, he said 23C no thermocline to speak of. Ok, I thought, A liitle chilly but for the bottom time we were going to have no worries.

I was doing an advanced course and my student had a full suit and was fine. I looked around and EVERYONE was in 2 piece 5 or 7mm with hoods gloves and god knows what else. I started to get a bit worried and though perhaps I had misheard the temp on the bottom, plus the fact that some of these guys were giving me funny looks.

Anyhow, bottom temp 24C toasty for me and less weight to worry about, I am a brit but I personally thing cold water diving is nuts.

Happy Diving

wht about jamaican rum?

Don't get me started. I could tell you stories about the beauty of having rum warmed in the sand and chased with a bit of pepsi.... or not..
Like liquid gold..
Hmmm I feel a what's your favorite drink thread coming on :P

TCDiver1,
Agreed - you've got some great independent/micro breweries over in the US. BTW Ever tried Dogs Head? (From Pennsylvania I think) a cracking brew - I hate to admit this but I think it's the best in the world but it's seriously expensive !

It sounds like you're really SOL. Do you EVER get 75F water in Michigan besides in your bathtub? I spent a lot of time there (Crystal Lake, Torch Lake up near Traverse City) as a kid and getting in the water was torture.

Thats why they make thicker wets suits and dry suits. ;)

Our surface waters can get to 75F but around here, i don't think i've ever seen most of our waters below 30' be more than 70 degrees.

What is really cool this time of year is on deeper dives, its possible to hit three thermoclines. You can be freezing your noogies off at depth sub 40 degrees while the surface water on your safety or deco stops will really make you sweat. It can make exposure protection choices a real challange.

dbulmer, i've never had that one but i bet it is good. Really hard to realize all the good microbrews we have going over here. Most of them you can only get locally so unless you get to that neck of the woods, you will never get a chance to try that particular brew. So many beers, so little time. ;)

So after a pretty nice, relaxing warm dive in Port Antonio.
Some of my dive buddies decide to take a dip in the Blue Lagoon (featured in the movie of the same name).

Suffice to say it was nowhere near as warm, 73F according to the reg. Which is just brutal in my opinion ;) . Lol!
So for all those who are self-avowed, proud, warm-water wussies.
Stand up and be counted!
I decided to create a list. Feel free to add your comments.

You know you're a warm-water wussie when
  • Water temps below the upper 70's have you thinking of cancelling the dive
  • You wonder if wearing a drysuit while everyone else is in skins or a shorty looks bad
  • You wear 5 and 7mm westsuits when everyone else is in a 3mm shorty
  • The thought of dusting snow off your kit prior to a dive has you shaking in your booties! :11:

I have never dove without a 6.5 mil farmer jon. Looking for a dry suit.
