For those of you who cannot understand my frustration, try this:

You only have yellow shirts in your wardrobe. You wear a yellow short everyday. I know you only has yellow shirt. I invite you to a party. Then I tell you that you wore the wrong color because everyone else is wearing blue. And you won't get frustrated with me. Yeah right!

... I'd shrug my shoulders, walk out, and go find less narrow-minded folks to party with.

Why be around someone who doesn't accept you for who you are? Why make that *your* problem?

In your case, the more you talk about this dude, the more convinced I am that he's the wrong instructor for you. Are the "benefits" really worth the angst? Why are you still dealing with this dude ...

randytay you keep bringing up the fact that he knows the rig you dive and you also said that you have had discussions with him about this. Well then on the flip side you know how he feels and what rig he dives and teaches in so yo could have asked the question beforehand also. As a DM you are there to help the Instructor facilitate HIS class not yours. I DM for two different Instructors and they have slightly different ways they run their class. I as their DM approach them before the class starts away from any students and work out the details. If you truly wanted a discussion on an open forum don't get defensive about the feedback not everybody is going to agree with you and you have to accept that. If you can't handle differing opinions ask the question or vent your frustrations to people that have the same mind sent as you and you will get the answers you want.

I still don't understand your frustration. It's just a shirt. Change it! I'm sure your friend will loan you a blue one.

Personally, I'd take advantage of the situation and try out every piece of gear the owner would let out of the shop.

Hey Randy how about this why don't you just put down what you are looking for us to say because you have showed that you don't want our opinions you want people to tell you what you want to hear.

Telling you what you want to hear is not going to change your instructors views so why keep this up. You have been givin the only 2 options here and that is suck it up and deal or change instructors.

If you feel that strongly about it, then take your DM training elsewhere that allows you to wear your own rig the way you like it.

At first I thought that the instructor had asked for your assistance on the side and then whined about your gears. However, it's a different animal if you were taking a DM class with him. Then I suppose he can dictate gear usage. Though if that were me, I'd tell him and the shop to kiss my ass and go elsewhere even though that elsewhere may be hours away.

I am taking my DM somewhere else which I have posted my experience with him before. I have not gone put with him again for sometime but when I do, I will be using rental. This incident is a different ball game.

And you should get upset with me, considering I am flitting around the party telling all my guest that they are untrained and unsafe and implying you don't know how to throw a party. According to you yellow shirts are the only safe way to mingle at a party and you are letting them know that.

Randy, you are way to hung up on the whole DIR and BP agenda. Either take DM under his guy with his rules and learn what he has to teach you or move on. If you can't dive in good trim and in great buoyancy control in ANY gear, you need to work on your skills anyway. It can be done, I do it all the time. I routinely go from a cheap jacket BC in the pool where I can hold trim in 4 ft of water to a BP in a drysuit and I routinely dive no BC at all, keeping good trim and buoyancy control in them all.
Just curious, how long have you been diving and when did you take your DIR class? Don't see any of that in your profile.

And how did you conclude i am telling your guest they were unsafe or untrained? Just because I wore a yellow shirt? Because I chose to wear a yellow shirt? And by simply wearing a yellow shirt you gather that I am letting them know that wearing a yellow shirt is the only way to go? No wonder people like me has so much problem with course and its all because of people like you!

And did I say I am taking my DM with this person? *shakes head*

Randy--Im sorry near as I can see you have not completed the example-perhaps if someone does it will help YOUR understanding.
You are invited to a party in a SHIRT SHOP. The shirt shop derives a great part of its income by teaching people how to wear blue shirts and they of course sell blue shirts. This is how the shirt shop stays in buisiness and supports its shirt salesmen and its shirt instructors. The person throwing the party in essence offers you a very good discount on blue shirts. You only have yellow shirts in your wardrobe. You wear a yellow shirt everyday. The shop owner knows you only have a yellow shirt and offers you the full use of any one of his blue shirts whilst you are at the party.
You really have two options. Stay at the party and wear a blue shirt but maybee whilst at the party suggest that blue and yellow stripes might be an option to broaden the shirt shops inventory and sales in the future. ( a really good option)
OR--go to/set up a yellow shirt shop.

And I have no problem with that. But you see, owner also sells yellow shirt although they are not stocked. He knows I only have yellow shirt but made no reference to shirt colors BEFORE his invitation to me. I would have less problem if he has brief me on the dress code BEFORE. But during the party he told me its the wrong color and that it was too formal based on... colors? Thats where I have the problem.

The example is complete. It is as it is, dont over interpret it.

Wrong. I am open to what everyone has to say but get the facts right first. Everyone is offering advise but most of them has the facts to the situation wrong.

Thanks Bob. He is not my instructor... yet. Although he WAS my instructor for other courses. We have some kind of business relations where walking out on him is not an option for now.

My frustration is not about the shirt which most people think it is. My frustration is the way and timing he tells me about the shirt. It would be more of a non issue if he tells me about it BEFORE the party.
