I was just looking at my dive log for a post I did earlier. I wanted to give a little advice that might help someone else. When I did OW waaay back in '02 (wink), my instructor taught us to wear our mask strap high up on the back of our heads 'like a beanie'. Funny in retrospect, I don't think I've ever worn a beanie! But I digress.. After 60+ dives and most with mask flooding (I wear a goatee) and trying countless masks, on dive #70 I decided to lower my mask strap. I did my next 8 dives that weekend without so much as a drop of water inside my mask! I know this isn't on par with discovering a cure for telemarketers but it is such a relief to not have to fiddle with my mask on every dive. I hope this helps somebody else. Happy diving to all!

lucky you
I have moved the mask strap up and down the back of my head sometimes it works most times it leaks.

Surely you misunderstood the Inst? A high strap will pull it off position and cause a leak. Also more likely to lose it - which cannot be good.

A good fitting mask should adhere to the face with a slight vacuum, no strap, then - the strap should hold it in position during activity. :snorkel:

Never heard of wearing a mask strap like that ... nor can I imagine it would do anything except make it more likely that you could lose it (perhaps he was promoting mask sales).

I have a mustache and goatee. Now, mind you, the goatee never caused a problem with my mask, but the mustache did. I tried a few solutions, from slathering it with goo (messy) to shaving the darn thing off (looked like a Quaker). Then one day I was listening to a Jimmy Buffett tune and had an epiphany ... shave off the top half of the 'stache ... "the Boston Blackie kind". It works wonderfully.

Ever since adopting the "diver's trim" I haven't had any difficulties with mask leakage.
